Arsenal Team News: Robin Van Persie In For Thierry Henry

As I thought this morning, Wenger has opted to start Robin Van Persie alongside Adebayor, and rest Henry by putting him on the bench. It makes a lot of sense, and I’m glad I stuck my neck out and predicted he’d start with RvP!

Henry can always come on from the bench anyway if we need him.

It also looks like Arsene has opted for 4-4-2 and not gone with the 4-5-1 that has seen us do so well in Europe. With 4-4-2, expect Arsenal to create a lot of chances and go out for the 3 points we need in the fight for fourth spot.

Here is the team in full:

Starting Eleven:
Jens Lehmann, Emmanuel Eboue, Kolo Toure, Philippe Senderos, Mathieu Flamini, Alexander Hleb, Cesc Fabregas, Gilberto Silva, Robert Pires, Robin van Persie & Emmanuel Adebayor.

Substitutes:
Mart Poom, Johan Djourou, Abou Diaby, Freddie Ljungberg & Thierry Henry.

It will be interesting to see who the captain will be, but I’d guess that Jens would fill the role.

The Biggest 2 Weeks Of The Season Start At Old Trafford…

The Start Of A Killer 2 Weeks…

Arsenal have a huge 2 weeks ahead of them, with vital games against Manchester United, Portsmouth, West Brom, Villareal and Spurs. Then 3 days after that is the 2nd leg of the Champions League Semi-Final.

With so many games in such a short amount of time, you would expect Wenger to rotate the squad around – so you’ll probably see Sol making a few starts, and see Henry being rested a few times.

But let’s start with Manchester United this afternoon. Wenger will start with Adebayor, but will he rest Henry? Van Persie is waiting in the wings so it’s possible. Adebayor should prove to be interesting for Arsenal, since he brings that something different to the team – United might not be able to cope with him. I remember when Kanu came to Arsenal and no-one gave him a chance against the formidable Jaap Stam. Then he sold him with a beautiful feint and opened up the defence for Anelka to score. Brilliant skill…

The other players apart from the captain who have played a lot of games recently are Fabregas, Toure, Senderos, Flamini, Gilberto and Eboue. Toure and Eboue will start because they have energy to burn, and Gilberto is now a calming influence on the young kids. I wouldn’t be surprised if Diaby came in for Fabregas though, especially after his impressive display against Aston Villa last week.

On the wings, Wenger has a few options including Freddie, Hleb, Reyes or Pires – and even Theo could make an appearence today. He’s been on the bench for almost every first team game since he joined so Arsene must think he is ready to give something to seniors. Don’t be surprised if he contributes something to the United or Pompy game.

United themselves are on a great run in the Premiership, since being knocked out of the Champions League by Benfica and they have won their last 9 league games, are only 7 points behind Chelski and visit Stamford Bridge for a 6-pointer at the end of the month.

They are going to give absolutely everything (as if they needed any more reason to beat us), and if Arsenal are to win they will have to give 110% and stand up to United’s physical approach. United are dangerous from most areas of the pitch, especially with Rooney in great form, but they also know how to mix it up and put the boot in when necessary.

So if Arsenal let United intimidate them it’ll be difficult to get 3 points.

A team with Diaby, Gilberto, Freddie & Hleb would make more sense, as Pires and Reyes aren’t really suited to physical games. Adebayor knows how to look after himself and if Henry doesn’t start then Van Persie is ready to prove what he can do.

I have a sneaky feeling that Henry might be on the bench today, and that would really mess with United mentally – don’t Arsenal think enough of us to start Henry?

From recently memory, we’ve actually done better at Old Trafford without Titi, with the 1-0 winner from Wiltord to clinch the league in 2002, and the 2-0 win over United in the FA Cup the season after, with goals from Edu and Wiltord again.

There probably won’t be too many goals in it but Arsenal always make chances and I can see Arsenal winning by the odd goal. I predict Arsenal will win 2-1, with goals from Adebayor and Toure.

Lehmann In, Sol Campbell Out?

Lehmann Has Been Outstanding This Season…

After all the speculation about who would be Germany’s number one for the World Cup, it has finally been announced officially that Lehmann will be picked over Oliver Kahn.

I’m not really bothered about the German National Team, but it’s good news that Jens has been rewarded with walking out with his National team in his home country in the biggest tournament in the world. Kahn has been very inconsistent this year and I would have been surprised if the big ape got the nod over Lehmann.

This is great news for Arsenal especially with the run in, as Lehmann knows he’s Germany’s keeper this summer. I would hate to think how his impressive form would turn if he found out a poor-performing Kahn was picked ahead of him – he might start making those big mistakes that he has done in the past. Luckily he’s cut them out completely this season and look where we are – in the semi-finals of the Champions League!

Along with Cesc, Toure and Henry, Lehmann has been so consistent the entire campaign and has been a great influence on a team in transition at the beginning of the season. He deserves his place in the German starting eleven. I just wonder what kind of abuse Oliver Kahn’s going to come out with in the coming weeks!

The other big news (apart from some game midweek, can’t remember who it was against…) is that Sol Campbell is ‘ready’ to come back to the Arsenal team.

Oh right, Sol’s ready now is he? Thanks for letting us know Sol!

That’s great Sol, but where were you when we needed you? You abandoned your team-mates after a horror 45 minutes against West Ham and to be quite frank, Sol has come back physically and mentally when Arsenal need him the least.

Out of the experienced players Lehmann, Henry and Freddie have all stuck around when the going’s got tough, and even though Gilberto didn’t have the greatest of starts to this season and had some shocking performaces – at least he’s been around to build. And look how the team is performing now.

Since Sol left the team Arsenal have progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League, set a new defensive record in Europe and have been flying in the league recently.

Don’t get me wrong – Sol has been excellent for us in the past, but Arsenal’s defence have been outstanding in the last few months and got us through against European giants Real Madrid and Juventus.

It would be criminal to drop anyone of the back four for Sol Campbell. And I don’t think Ashley Cole should replace Flamini at left back either but that’s another story.

Some players think they have a divine right to start for Arsenal and that’s just not true.

Arsenal have been putting in great performances as a team, and it seems to me that Campbell just wants to get some games under his belt so he can get back into the England team. I doubt very much if he cares much about Arsenal.

Sol Campbell doesn’t have a chance of dislodging John Terry and Rio Ferdinand and should really get used to warming the bench for a long time…

Discuss: Arsenal Through To Champions League Semi-Finals!

Another Great Team Performance…

Arsenal produced another superb display in Europe, and are now into the Champions League semi-finals for the first time in our history! We will play against surprise package Villareal, who dumped another Italian side – Inter Milan – out of the competition last night.

Barcelona beat Benfica 2-0 tonight as well, and will play AC Milan in the other semi-final. Out of the teams remaining, Arsenal would surely prefer Villareal to the other 2 European heavyweights.

I’ll leave the floor open for people to leave their messages about our historic achievements! Although, of course we all hope that history is made by actually winning it!

Well done Arsenal!!

The Similarities Between Arsenal & Liverpool…

Through Adversity Comes Great Strength…

Arsenal continued their great recent form yesterday against Aston Villa, after a great result against the mighty Juventus in midweek.

Many people have talked about the similarities between us and Liverpool last season, with our poor league position and our adventure in the Champions League. As the season progresses, it’s hard to dismiss what’s happening.

So here are the obvious – and not so obvious – similarities with last years Liverpool side:

  • Arsenal (like Liverpool) are struggling to fight at the top of the Premiership and are fighting for the fourth Champions League spot.
  • They are fighting for the fourth spot with their closest rivals (Arsenal – Spurs, Liverpool – Everton).
  • Arsenal (and Liverpool) play against Juventus in the Champions League quarter finals, and in the first leg manage to score two home goals.
  • One of their most influencial players (Vieira/Owen) leave for a top European team the summer before to challenge for European honours. They are unsuccessful and their former club progress further in Europe than their new team.
  • The captain (Henry/Gerrard) is strongly rumoured to be leaving in the summer unless they match their ambition on the football pitch.
  • They sign a Monaco striker (Adebayor/Morientes) in the January transfer window, but he is cup-tied for the Champions League.
  • The both play in red…

But I’m not that superstitious, and that last point I made is leaning on the fact that I’m sure if we look over the last hundred years of British footballing history we could find similarities with a number of clubs.

The fact is that Arsenal have been brilliant in Europe this season, and because of this I think that we have every chance of winning the competition – not just because of the similarities with Liverpool last season.

But as the season goes on, it’s funny how the similarities start building up… I’m not a believer. Yet… I’m off to buy a lottery ticket!
