Arsenal’s 007 Ensures Wide Open Title Race!

Thierry Henry: The Assassin…

Since Henry’s return from injury Arsenal have been simply devastating. Arsenal’s form before the new year without the captain was inconsistent but since the turn of the year we have been ruthless and more clinical in front of goal. Wins against Charlton, Liverpool, Blackburn and Manchester United have been impressive and shown what we’ve been missing with a fit Thierry Henry.

A common problem with Arsenal is that they have been accused of creating many chances but failing to take them but 2007 has seen Arsenal be brutal when presented with an opportunity. Scoring 4 goals against Charlton started the run and the way Arsenal disposed of Liverpool at Anfield was sensational. Even with 10 men at Blackburn Arsenal had few chances but still managed to come out comfortable winners with goals from Kolo and Henry. Even against Manchester United, Van Der Sar had very little to do for most of the game but when Arsenal had chances they took them.

To many times Arsenal have dominated play, had numerous attempts at goal and then been hit with a sucker punch from the oppositions only shot on target!

Hopefully the more clinical Arsenal is something we’ll be seeing more of this season.

Despite Thierry Henry scoring 4 goals in 4 games this month, and making countless others he has been critised for being quiet in games – and even been accused of being anonymous!

While this could be construed as true, you have to realise that Henry is not 26 anymore. He’s 29 going on 30 and he has adapted his game to the new team around him. While in the Vieira-era he would link up with Pires and Cole down the left handside and kill teams within the first 20 minutes he now takes a more measured approach to the game.

The young, energetic and hungry team around him will always run for the cause and this is when Henry’s experience and intelligence really shine through.

He thinks about what he is going to do and when he is ready will execute it to perfection.

Look at the goals against Blackburn Rovers and Manchester United. Two very different types of goals but Henry effectively killed both matches with those well timed attacks and as a result we are on a winning streak.

Against most teams we play against Henry is more that capable of running around sides causing all sorts of problems and he still does – but against teams like Manchester United and Liverpool (and when we are under pressure like against Blackburn Rovers) where chances are few and far between he will strike when the right opportunity arises.

What does this mean for Arsenal?

Well the New Year Henry has made Arsenal a better team than last year, with the Gunners doing marginly better than the last campaign and thanks to the January run still have an outside chance of doing some damage at the top of the league.

But the most optimistic aspect of this new team (that has looked like it has finally settled) is that next season Arsenal are going to be a real force in the league next season and beyond.

Regarding this season – yes, we are 12 points off Manchester United and people will point to the fact that they will have to lose 4 games and Arsenal will have to win all of their remaining fixtures but with the FA Cup and Champions League run it will be interested how United cope with travelling to Stamford Bridge and Anfield in between. Of course, it’s all speculation but I’ve seen worse collapses in the Premiership before – and several players like Ronaldo, Carrick, Saha, et al haven’t been under pressure of being so close to the title before. Better players have cracked under the heat of being top so I’m expecting a great finish to this season!

Chelsea look in trouble but do they have a reserve side? I mean surely in their ranks they have a reserve centre-back somewhere? And I’m not even going to talk about how stupid it is after spending £1,234,372 gazillion* in the transfer market (including £21 million on SWP and £32 million for Shevchenko) they can’t afford a central defender!

They did get Cashley Cole for Williams Gallas and £5 million – I wonder which team got the better deal there then?

There’s not doubt that ‘The Special One’ is a good manager when things are going well but you’re only really tested when things aren’t going your way. Do you blame the board for not spending in January when you got rid of your only defensive cover for a money-grabbing left back you didn’t need? And when you arrive do you proclaim that you have 2 World Class players in each poisition and that’s all you need?

Claudio Ranieri got sacked for finishing second so Mourinho might be getting worried about Liverpool and Arsenal on his heels!

In football anything can happen and I personally think second place is up for grabs but could Thierry Henry be the man to push Arsenal onto something even better?

This Is Why I Love Football! (w/ Player Ratings)

The Late, Late Show Presented By Thierry Henry…

With Liverpool beating the Russians yesterday most people – including myself – believed that this would give Manchester United a licence to go for all 3 points today because whatever happened they would be still 6 points clear anyway. But United decided to keep it tight and stiffle Arsenal and it worked – well, for 83 minutes anyway.

The first half was like a chess match and we had most of the possession with Manchester United having the best of the first 5 minutes and the best of the final 5 minutes – with Lehmann making some excellent saves to keep out the league leaders.

United we sitting pretty in the second half when they scored off the break like Arsenal have been in recent weeks with their only real attack of the half. Larsson squared the ball to Scholes who was on the halfway line who played it wide to Ronaldo on the left wing. He played the ball into the empty space behind Eboue and Fabregas was left to track back – but Evra crossed the ball into the area and Toure’s touch only directed it to Rooney who scored his customary goal against Arsenal to score his only 5th of this Premiership campaign.

United did to Arsenal what we did against Blackburn and Liverpool!

After the goal the game failed to really get into gear and the disappointing Hleb was replaced by Robin Van Persie who was on the bench because of his ankle problem and it was a scrappy peice of play that lead to Arsenal’s equaliser.

Fabregas made a surging run into the Manchester United half and was tackled by Scholes and Evra, which lead to Rosicky and Cesc fighting for the ball on the edge of the area. The ball bounced around but Cesc managed to feed Rosicky on the right hand side to curle a great cross into the box. Henry missed the ball but Van Persie made a great run and smashed the ball into the roof of the net!

A fantastically taken goal and a fantastic equaliser!

From then on there was only one team who was going to win it.

Throughout the second half Team Manchester were wasting time, sitting on their 1-0 lead and now it had bitten them in the ass!

Arsenal kept fighting and they showed great desire until the final whistle. Eboue who has seen his crossing improve greatly this season and once he played a smart one-two with Rosicky he drove an outstanding cross into the 6 yard box with only seconds remaining. His pin-point cross found captain Henry and he obliged by heading the ball into the United net!

Thierry Henry had done it again!

The Gunners had won yet another testing match in 2007 and have made January a golden month for Arsenal – the team have been brilliant over the last few weeks and can only get better!

And Arsenal had fulfilled my prediction of winning the game 2-1!

Arsenal may be 12 points away from Manchester United by they are on the heels of Liverpool and Chelsea and there’s still a lot of football left to play this season…

ARSENAL 4 LIFE’S PLAYER RATINGS:

Jens Lehmann – 8/10
Made some great saves – particularly at the end of the first half from a rasping shot from Rooney and a header from Larsson. Was exposed for the goal and didn’t stand a chance. An extra point for pretending to be injured at the end of the game!

Emmanuel Eboue – 8/10
Kept Ronaldo quiet and pushed back the winger with his forward runs. He Reduced the antics on the pitch and more importantly produced a brilliant cross for Thierry Henry for the winning goal.

Gael Clichy – 7/10
Coped well against Rooney on the wing and couldn’t really do anything about the goal. Rooney was quiet for most of the game and that was thanks to Gael. Also made a fantastic last-ditch tackle from Larsson who was through on goal and looked certain to score.

Philippe Senderos – 6/10
Was mainly solid but made some really basic defending errors early on in the game. Kept Giggs and Larsson quiet for the most part.

Kolo Toure – 8/10
Organised the backline well and unlucky that his header directed the ball to Rooney for the goal. Pushed forward in the closing stages of the second half and forced Manchester United further and further back. Did well against Larsson and Giggs.

Alexander Hleb – 4/10
Very poor and substituted after 65 minutes. Couldn’t keep the ball at all which was disappointing from a player who’s game is excellent ball retention. Passes were inaccurate and he lost Evra for the Manchester United goal.

Tomas Rosicky – 7/10
Wasn’t afraid to shoot but his attempts at goal were well off the mark. Ineffective for most of the match except for the final 15 minutes when he finally found his stride but he did contribute to the goals. Did well to create the opening with Cesc for the cross for the first goal and played a smart one-two for the Eboue cross at the end of the game.

Mathieu Flamini – 8/10
Worked tirelessly in midfield for the suspended Gilberto and put in another solid performance.

Cesc Fabregas – 9/10
Did well against a tight 5 man United midfield and pushed the team forward whenever he could. Suffered from United’s deep formation but found space and moved the ball well, and was in the build up for both Arsenal goals.

Emmanuel Adebayor – 8/10
Ran his heart out for the cause and gave everything. Looked like the biggest threat from Arsenal and gave Vidic and Rio Ferdinand all kinds of problems.

Thierry Henry – 6/10
Found it hard against a solid Manchester United defence and was quiet for most of the match. But Henry is a special player and given time and space can kill teams in an instant and did just that right at the death. One extra point for goading Gary Neville after Van Persie scored the equaliser!

Substitutes:

Robin Van Persie – 8/10
Only played 25 minutes but showed great movement for the goal and to score from that angle was excellent and the quality of the goal shouldn’t be underestimated.

Julio Baptista – 5/10
Came on after 80 minutes for Flamini but didn’t have much time to make a contribution.

Forget The Others – This Is The Game Of The Season!

Liverpool versus Chelsea is a big game but nothing compares to a match with Arsenal and Manchester United. These two teams have dominated since The Premiership began and although we’re in fourth place Arsenal are in good form and have a great chance of beating United again this season.

If the weekend goes our way and Chelsea lose to Liverpool and we win on Sunday then we are only 6 points off Chelsea and reduce the gap with Team Manchester to 12. Still a good few points off but there’s still a lot of football to play and we’ve come back from similar positions before. Certainly if Arsenal do lose then as Arsene points out the title race is over for Arsenal, which would be a pity with so much of the season remaining.

Fergie has spoken and said that he expects Wenger to mastermind a revival at Arsenal after their poor form at the start of the season. Not sure to make of that – usually Arsene and Ferguson would be down each others throats but I suppose Red Nose doesn’t want to give Arsenal any more reasons to beat them by starting a war of words.

And Fabregas has piled in on the love-fest and talked about his admiration for Paul Scholes, who has been in good form this season. No compliments for former-Spurs player Michael Carrick though, which was a bit strange…

Ronaldo, Larsson and Scholes will have to be kept quiet on Sunday as well as Wayne Rooney, who has been out of sorts this season. Probably the more reason to keep an eye on him as he’s due a good performance – and he usually does okay against us!

Arsene has got his tactics spot on recently at Blackburn and in Liverpool so if Arsenal can get their smooth passing game going then even Manchester United will struggle against us. We will have to be careful of quick breaks from United with players like Ronaldo, Giggs and Rooney in the side.

The team pretty much picks itself with Gilberto being replaced by Flamini in the centre. The only two positions that aren’t certain is the right back and who will partner Thierry Henry in attack. Eboue is looking to return for Sunday but if Wenger doesn’t think he is ready then Hoyte will start, and it’s a toss up between Van Persie and Adebayor for the second forward position.

Van Persie has been given an 80% chance to be fit for the game while Adebayor is waiting in the wings. I’d probably prefer Adebayor to start since his brilliant performance against United at Old Trafford earlier on in the season.

Come on Arsenal!

Another feature of this game is that Mike Riley will be the referee tomorrow – which could either be a bad thing or a good thing.

He did award a penalty against Charlton at the Emirates a few week ago so let’s not hope we’ve used up all our luck regarding his decision-making! He does owe us big after the pathetic penalty he gave at Old Trafford after Shrek decided to show Sol Campbell his best Swan Lake impression so hopefully he doesn’t gift United another penalty!

Predictions?

Well I’ve predicted 2-1 for the last 3 games and although I was wrong on all 3 occasions I’m getting superstitious now because when I have predicted that scoreline we have won – and convincingly!

The bookmakers have Arsenal as slight favourites but the odds are pretty much even – not even the bookies can pick a winner! But as ever I have full confidence in this current team and I think it will be a tight game with a few goals.

So you won’t be surprised that I’ll go for a prediction of 2-1 yet again! 🙂

Arsenal v Manchester Utd: The Video Preview

Arsenal and Manchester United have dominated the Premiership began and although Liverpool against Chelsea is a big game it has nothing on Arsenal against Manchester United.

I’ll do a more detailed preview tomorrow but for now here’s a trailer for Sunday’s game if you needed to get in the mood!

Bye Bye Lauren…

Well Arsenal have let yet another experienced player go in Lauren and he has decided to join Portsmouth. I wasn’t surprised he stayed in England because he’s been here for 7 years and is settled now – and Pompy is a better choice than West Ham or Charlton!

And just like Pires, Vieira, Edu, Parlour, Wrighty and Seaman when they moved clubs I wish Lauren all best for the future.

When I first heard about Lauren possibly moving on I was surprised but then Wenger has been building this new team for the last couple of years and Lauren just wasn’t a part of it.

It’s sad when players like Lauren and Pires leave the club because they have given everything and contributed so much to our recent successes.

It’s easy to look back and remember previous successes.

But times change quickly and move on in football.

You sometimes lose sight of the future in football especially when it’s all about winning and playing good football here and now but we are now looking at Wenger’s new team and they are more than capable of emulating the team of previous years.

Players move from club to club all the time but Arsenal have the habit of buying players who stay loyal and become a part of the club.

Lauren was one of those and I will be giving him a warm welcome the next time Portsmouth grace the Emirates turf.
