So Who’s Writing Off Arsenal This Weekend?

Chelsea (The Emirates Stadium)
Sunday 16th December, 2007
Kick off: 4pm – Live On Sky Sports 1

So this weekend marks another Grand Slam Sunday.

If you didn’t know what a Grand Slam Sunday was, it’s a term coined by Sky Sports for when the top four play in the same day against each other. If you’ve got Digital TV then you’ll know what all the hype is all about.

And funnily enough, in recent times our record in Grand Slam Sundays is pretty good.

Last season’s first GSS (I can’t be arsed typing Grand Slam Sunday anymore) was Manchester United v Arsenal and Chelsea v Liverpool on the 17th of September, 2006. Chelsea beat Liverpool thanks to a Didier Drogba goal in the lunchtime kick off, and thanks to Adebayor’s goal and Cesc’s magic, Arsenal won against the odds at Old Trafford against a United side who were at that point flying at the top of the league.

And in the second GSS (21st January 2007), Robin van Persie and Thierry Henry’s late, late show overcame United at the Emirates, while Hansel from Zoolander and Jermaine Pennant’s goals were enough to beat Chelsea at Anfield.

Just like the first Manchester United game, no-one was giving us a chance.

And the same can be said for this Sunday with Arsenal struggling for form, without our big name players and a huge chunk of our midfield missing.

The 4 games against Sevilla, Aston Vanilla (2nd half), Newcastle and Boro hasn’t been of the same standard as earlier in the season. I mentioned last week that we can’t really expect Arsenal to keep up the same kind of form and we were going to hit a rough patch sooner or later, especially with injuries to key players.

Well now is to end that run.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have almost crept up the league under the radar. Winning comfortably and without setting the world on fire, there seems to be a conspicuous lack of media attention on Chelsea on the whole. Is this a sign of things to come under the post-Mourinho era? We’ll have to wait and see.

So who is the favourite going into the game?

Well it will be interesting to see who the bookies fancy, and I can’t really comment on Chelsea because I just haven’t seen much of them recently!

But with defeat in a pretty dire game against Middlesbrough last weekend, hopefully everyone will be writing us off against Chelsea like they did against Manchester United last season.

The character of this Arsenal team has been extremely impressive over the last 18 months, and I am confident that defeat will serve as huge motivation to beat Chelsea.

But it won’t be easy.

Sometimes it needs a couple of bad performances and bad results for teams to bounce back and really fight in the coming games. Hopefully history will repeat itself and this young Arsenal side yet again manage to pull off another surprise against the odds.

And the return of Van Persie and Diaby is great news for the team. Arsene has hinted that Fabregas, Hleb and Flamini might have a chance to return on Sunday, and concedes he might be forced into making a gamble or two. Chelsea is a tough game to come back into though so we’ll see what happens. Even the return of only one of those would be a huge boost for the team.

And finally don’t forget this Sunday is ‘Be A Gooner, Be A Giver‘ day where the club is looking to raise money for the TreeHouse charity, so give what you can. William Gallas spoke about supporting the charity and how it also relfects the togetherness in the squad.

It looks like legend Thierry Henry keeps giving to Arsenal aswell, as it appears he donated £3,000 to the cause which is extremely nice of him.

Arsene Wenger’s Mistakes Have Cost Arsenal

Middlesbrough (2) – (1) Arsenal
Rosicky (90’+4)
The Riverside Stadium, Middlesbrough

Arsenal lost 2-1 this afternoon at Middlesbrough, and on the performance Arsenal deserved nothing.

With injuries to key midfielders Cesc, Flamini and Hleb we couldn’t get our passing game going at all. The story was the same at St James’ Park, where Newcastle dominated for the majority of that match.

The key to Arsenal’s success on the pitch this season is the quick, one-touch passing in midfield which no-one in the league has been able to defend against this season. Another reason Arsenal have been so successful this campaign is that they push high up the pitch, and put the opposition under constant pressure.

Without Hleb, Cesc or Flamini, Arsenal can’t play their normal game. This was shown in the second half at Villa Park, and for most of the game against Newcastle and then Middlesbrough.

But the ironic thing was that despite these injuries, Arsene had enough options to compensate for their absence.

Gilberto is a passenger in this team.

He is too slow, cannot pass the ball and only succeeds in giving the ball away, was fouling everywhere and is just not in tune with the current style of play. He struggled against Newcastle and today he was second rate.

He was completely lost.

It was like Arsenal were playing with 10 men for the entire game.

Arsene should have played Diarra and Denilson who are much quicker on the ball and have much better passing ability.

Arsenal’s passing and ball retention is usually excellent but too many times moves broke down in midfield. This only served to give Middlesbrough more confidence as the game progressed and gave Arsenal an uphill struggle from the start.

Gilberto has played against Sevilla, Newcastle and Middlesbrough in recent games and it’s safe to say those 3 games have been the worst we have played all season.

A midfield of Rosicky, Diarra, Denilson and Eboue (or Walcott) would have given Middlesbrough a totally different game.

And unfortunately, Eduardo is another player who has cost Arsenal dear.

Against Newcastle he was anonymous and at the Riverside he was worse. He hasn’t settled as yet to the Premier League and Arsene really should have started Bendtner who would have caused Newcastle and Middlesbrough problems.

People say you can’t start two big players upfront but Bendtner was the more sensible option. And if Arsene was so opposed to starting the two tall men he could have played with a 5 man midfield – but to do so with both Eduardo and Gilberto was a liability.

Arsene really has to think about his team selection for the next league game against Chelsea.

The Arsenal defence of Sagna, Toure, Gallas and Clichy who have been excellent this season were exposed far too many times. And the players themselves knew our midfield was not strong enough. Clichy didn’t push on down the wing as much as he usually does, and Kolo decided to bypass the midfield area completely with long ball after long ball.

And once again Adebayor was isolated in attack.

Wenger has been ruthless in dropping Jens, and he has to do the same with Gilberto.

Disappointing, Frustrating And Yet Encouraging…

Newcastle United (1) – (1) Arsenal
Adebayor 3′
St James’ Park, Newcastle

Last night I was frustrated.

Arsenal took a stunning lead when a perfect cross from Eboue found Adebayor in the centre, who chested the ball and emphatically smashed the ball into the net. It was a beautiful goal and came after only 3 minutes.

But after that Arsenal only threatened to score another, with Shay Given only making one save all night after the opening goal.

Without Hleb, Fabregas, Flamini and Van Persie in particular of the current absentees, Arsenal lack creativity and Rosicky was left to try and make things single-handedly.

So for me anyway, what followed was a frustrating and nervous game which was partly due to Arsenal’s lack of cohesion in the final third and Newcastle’s rough house tactics spearheaded by the direct Joey Barton and Alan Smith, two of England’s finest.

Credit to Newcastle, they took the game to Arsenal after the goal and at times Arsenal held on. Without any sort of imagination or creativity from the Geordies they resorted to the direct approach, something Allardyce is much more comfortable with from his days at Bolton.

I wonder how the home crowd will respond to seeing that game after game.

We had to defend cross after cross, and set-piece after set-piece.

But in the end, Arsenal held on for a point.

So what do I think a day after?

Well the fact was Arsenal had an off day, which is understandable after the amount of injuries we’ve had as well as our fixture schedule. And Arsenal have blessed us with some awesome football this season so they’re allowed to put in a poor performance or two.

Gilberto in particular looked rusty, and Eboue, Adebayor and Rosicky looked out of sorts without the influence of Fabregas’ passing and Hleb’s ball retention.

But the defence was resolute as ever, with Gallas, Toure, Sagna and Clichy digging deep for the cause. Almunia made a good save from a corner in the second half, and was exposed for the equaliser which he couldn’t really do much about.

So in the end, to be 4 points clear of Manchester United in December is an excellent position to be in.

It’s a sign of how far this squad have moved forward, when we’re disappointed with a point which puts us clear of the reigning champions.

If we played Newcastle a few weeks ago, when Liverpool and Portsmouth did last night’s starting eleven would have beaten them – easily. Unfortunately for us, the pressure was on the Geordies and they were always going to be hard to play against. I’ve seen Newcastle a few times this earlier this season and yesterday was one of the most impressive performances they’ve had this campaign. Which obviously doesn’t bode well if THAT was the best they can produce. For them it will be a long, long season with an extremely overrated manager.

I’d be surprised if he’s still there at the end of the season.

For Arsenal, they have a chance to put that performance behind them and kick on in December to fight for the top of the Premier League.

Am I The Only One Worried About Tonight’s Game?

Newcastle United (St James’ Park)
Wednesday 5th December, 2007
Kick Off: 7.45pm – Live On Sky Sports 1

Everyone is banking on Arsenal to cruise tonight against Newcastle, who have been pretty toothless recently under Sam Allardyce as he proves how much of an overrated manager he actually is.

But against Arsenal, his record isn’t bad.

With Bolton, he would be direct and that would cause us real problems. Obviously he is not getting results in the North East because he is forced to make a team actually play decent football, which is a far cry from his tactics at the Reebok.

But with only 4 points from their last 6 games Newcastle – and Allardyce in particular – are desperate.

And with this desperation it could signal trouble for Arsenal.

With injuries to Diaby, Fabregas, Hleb and Flamini our midfield is pretty bare, and with the Walrus urgently needing something from this game to keep the fans and board off his back who says he won’t try to kick Arsenal out of the game?

It looks like Diarra, Denilson and Gilberto will figure in tonight’s game and they will have to be on top form if they are to withstand the physical approach from Newcastle.

I think tonight will be a tough game and I’m just not comfortable with everyone putting 3 points in the bag before the game has even kicked off.

Newcastle have played poorly of late, but against the unbeaten league leaders they will raise their game tenfold.

Let’s make no mistake about it, tonight will be a fight.

I think we’ll just about edge it but I don’t think it will be as straight-forward as most people are making it out to be.

Villa – Newcastle – Cesc – Hleb – Lehmann – Spurs

Arsenal remain top of the table after winning at Villa Park, with goals from Flamini and Adebayor. Flamini has so much drive and that alone help him score the vital equaliser, while Adebayor ended his goal drought with an excellent header. Hopefully that goal will be the first of many in a very hectic December.

The first half was almost exhibition football, with Villa struggling to get the ball. They did score the opener against the run of play though, after a fortunate deflection put the ball into the path of Gardener. Villa did push us all the way in the second half, playing balls to Carew who caused all sorts of problems and even managed to hit the bar. The second half was encouraging though, as Arsenal showed the resolve to hold onto a lead and finish the game with 3 points.

Arsenal will travel to St James’ Park without Alexander Hleb, who was injured by a tackle from behind from Carew. Arsenal seemed to lose their flow when Hleb was replaced against Villa so hopefully we can still put in a winning performance on Wednesday. Van Persie, Cesc and Diaby are also probably a little short for the Newcastle game.

Meanwhile Adebayor calls for ‘focus’, and not the car apparently.

The obvious talk of Lehmann leaving in the January transfer window has started, and it is Wolfsburg which is the current club the German is linked too. I’m sure Jens will be linked to many clubs over the next couple of months, and he would probably fancy a move back to Germany. His relationship with Almunia has always been frosty, and the two don’t even speak anymore. With the togetherness and team-spirit playing a huge part in the young team’s success this season you wonder if it would be better for everyone if Arsene let the German leave. The only problem is if Almunia gets injured, but Fabianski is highly rated by the Arsenal staff.

And a note about last night’s Tottenham/Birmingham game.

Congratulations to Arsene’s former young guns Djourou (on loan), Muamba and in particular Sebastian Larsson, who scored a simply stunning winner in injury time to take the 3 points. I managed to catch the last 15 minutes and Alex McLeish’s side really pulled a smash and grab at White Hart Lane.

Spurs currently sit one point above the relegation zone.

Funny how everyone wrote us off and the so-called ‘experts’ said Spurs would finish above us isn’t it?

Arsene must be quietly satisfied inside. I know I was!

And Arsenal were drawn away to Burnley in the 3rd round of the FA Cup.

And before I forget, also congratualtions to Cesc who won the Young Footballer of the Year Award at the BBC London Sports Awards last night. Looks like yesterday was a great day in London for everyone!
