[Vote Here] Do You Want To See Cesc Fabregas Back At Arsenal?

As usual, the same rumours about Cesc Fabregas coming back to England (and Arsenal in particular) go around the rumour mill. For the last two seasons he’s been linked strongly with Manchester United, while it’s common knowledge that we have a “first refusal” on him if he ever did decide to leave the Nou Camp.

But do you want to see him back at Arsenal?

My stance is that even though we have a lot of midfield players the fact is we need a stronger squad to compete at the top of the Premier League. Last season we lost Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini, Abou Diaby (*chuckle*), Tomas Rosicky and Mikel Arteta for varying periods during the last campaign. Adding strength to our midfield wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.

The other factor to consider is that if Cesc does leave Barcelona (and I have a gut feeling he won’t) but if he did, then he would undoubtedly strengthen our rivals. If he went to Manchester United, Manchester City or even Chelsea, you can see that we would regret the decision not to get him back. He is most definitely still a world class player who has the ability to improve any team in world football.

So would you like to see him back at Arsenal? Or can you do without him? Maybe you think he’s lost it. Vote below and leave your thoughts in the comments section!

Mario Balotelli, Carlos Vela, Karim Benzema, Cesc Fabregas, Sami Khedira & Loic Remy

With the season over, I thought it would be interesting to see who Arsenal are linked to in the transfer market and the chances of them actually arriving at The Emirates this summer.

Mario Balotelli – 10% Chance

Silly season has already started and Mario Balotelli is a player we’ve been linked with, according to the Daily Mail. The reasoning is that we need a striker (the whole man and his dog knows this) and Super Mario is unhappy at the treatment he’s been receiving in Italy, a country that has problems with racism in football.

He’s also been linked with Liverpool, as they look to strengthen their forward line with the possibility of losing Luis Suarez to Real Madrid this summer.

Could Arsene Wenger handle him? Seems like another Nicklas Bendtner situation (although Balotelli is obviously more talented) and while he would probably be a decent signing (as our only real attacking option is Giroud) I can’t see this happening.

Carlos Vela – 10% Chance

According to ESPN, we have a clause that allows us to re-sign Vela back to Arsenal for only £3.2 million. He scored 16 goals in 37 games last season and while that’s a decent return I can’t see Arsene bringing him back just for the Mexican to sit on the bench.

Would be a decent squad addition but it won’t happen.

Karim Benzema – 20% Chance

We were linked with Benzema last season (along with Higuain) and in the end it was the Argentine striker that left Real Madrid – although it wasn’t to us it was to Napoli. The Daily Star believe Arsene Wenger has given a “massive hint” that the Frenchman is on the way to The Emirates.

He is French which makes the chances of him coming more likely, but unless Real bring in another striker it won’t happen – and for me he’s just not an Arsenal player. There’s better strikers available in my opinion and while he has a decent record he’s not world class. I suppose he could potentially work well with his ex-Madrid teammate Mesut Özil though.

Cesc Fabregas – 25% Chance

If he wants to leave and Barcelona want to sell, then it could happen. People argue that we have enough midfielders but the fact is that this season, Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Tomas Rosicky and Mathieu Flamini have all been missing for varying periods last season and surely if we have aspirations of winning the Premier League and doing better in Europe then we need a strong squad. Chelsea and Manchester City have extremely strong squads and they seem to cope fine with keeping the vast majority of players happy. If Cesc was going for around £25 to £30 million and we didn’t sign him, it would be criminal.

Sami Khedira – 15% Chance

If Arsene Wenger fails to bring Cescy back, then apparently our backup option is Sami Khedira. The 27 year old German international would be available for £15 million and the only way I can see us bringing him in is if Arsene Wenger feels that Mikel Arteta can’t do the same job anymore.

Loic Remy – 40% Chance

The Newcastle (well, QPR) striker would reportedly be available for around £8 million making this a more possible addition. It wouldn’t break the bank and I thought we should have brought him in last summer and even in January.

He has blistering pace, something we’re missing from our centre-forwards, and is a quality finisher. He’s been playing for QPR and Newcastle and surely coming to a top side like Arsenal is something he would thrive. Depending on his performances, he is capable of being Arsenal’s main striker or a very competent backup.

We definitely need a stronger striker force and buying Loic Remy for under £10 million would be an extremely smart piece of business.

Is Arsene Wenger Bringing Cescy Back?

The transfer rumours have already started and as usual it’s Cesc Fabregas who is apparently on the way out of Barcelona, as part of new managers Luis Enrique’s new plans.

But do we need him?

For me, I would say yes. Granted, we already have Özil, Ramsey, Wilshere, Cazorla, Flamini and Arteta, but as we found last season it’s important to have a very strong squad. When all our players are fit then the boss has a selection problem but we’ve seen with Ramsey’s absence this season that he was truly missed. Özil and Jack have also been out this season and it has effected our performances.

£25 million for the rerun of the prodigal son?

It’s a no brainer for me!

Best Of Luck To Bacary Sagna At Manchester City

We all knew Sagna was going to leave Arsenal and the most likely suitors were either going to be PSG or Manchester City, the two teams with money to burn. According to the latest reports, he’s on the way to the Premier League champions and will be on around £120,000 a week.

What can you say? He refused to sign a contract so where he goes it’s up to him. We’ve seen players go to Manchester City, Manchester United, Chelsea, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus… all the top teams are interested in our players.

And if we can’t persuade him to stay, what can we do?

Unlike other players who left the club, Bacary has given us his absolute all and his best years.

When I think about players who have left Arsenal, I have two distinct categories. The first is reserved for players I like to call “Thunder Cunts”. These are players who have no loyalty and no respect for the club, and include Samir Nasri, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robin Van Persie.

The other category is for players like Cesc Fabregas, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Kolo Toure and now Bacary Sagna. They may have left the club but they have given their best years to us and every single time they wore the Arsenal shirt they gave 110%.

Sagna has been at Arsenal since 2007 and played over 280 games for the club. He’s been with us for 7 seasons, a big portion of Arsene’s “barren spell” over the last 9 years. He’s had a chance to move on before but hasn’t forced a move and he’s given us his peak years. He’s 31 years old now and still has some life in him yet and you can’t blame him for wanting one final big move before he retires.

Unfortunately for us of course, he’s a massive player for us and Manchester City know this. In fact, it’s been a recurring transfer policy of theirs to take our top players to make themselves stronger and weaken us. If it wasn’t for Alex Ferguson they would have had Robin Van Persie last season as well.

There’s no point being bitter or upset about Sagna going to City, it’s happened and we can’t stop it. We can only look forward and I’ve said for a long time that I strongly believe that Carl Jenkinson is ready to step up and become an important Arsenal player. People quickly forget how fantastic Jenkinson was at the start of the 2012-2013 season when Sagna was injured for the first couple of months of the campaign.

I know a lot of Arsenal fans still need convincing but trust me, next season Jenkinson will be the man.

Ignore All The False Rumours, Here Are Some Realistic Arsenal Signings!

It appears the sarcasm from my last post was lost on some people and with Arsenal “linked” to players like Wayne Rooney, Gonzalo Higuain, Stevan Jovetic, Ashley Williams, Marouane Fellaini and even ex-captain Cesc Fabregas, I started to think about which players Arsenal should sign.

Most (if not all) of the above are all paper talk, putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5, because we all should know by now Arsene Wenger likes keeping his transfer dealings top secret. How many people knew we were going to bring in Santi Cazorla, Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud well before they signed? Exactly. No-one can predict who will be arriving at Arsenal well in advance of it happening, it’s just not the Arsenal way.

The Wayne Rooney “transfer” makes me laugh as Arsene knows exactly how the media works and it is obviously a plot to divert attention away from who Arsenal are actually trying to sign.

Instead of linking the obvious targets to the new “free-spending” Arsenal, it would be better to identify what specific areas of the pitch need strengthening and who is best to fill that void.

So what are Arsenal’s weaknesses?

Central Defence

Last season, it is well-documented that we had the second best defensive record in the Premier League. Some of that was down to dropping the captain and keeping the combination of Mertesacker and Koscielny in the middle, and some of it was down to a greater team emphasis on better defending.

But apart from Mertesacker, Koscielny and Vermaelen, our centre-back options are limited. Most of the top teams have at least 4 quality defenders that can be called upon during the season. We struggled in the cup competitions so rotating the defense (effectively) is something worth looking at. Manchester United have Rio Ferdinand, Chris Smalling, Johnny Evans, Phil Jones and Nemanja Vidic who they can call on, Chelsea have Branislav Ivanovic, David Luiz, Gary Cahill and John Terry and Manchester City have Vincent Kompany, Matija Nastatic, Joleon Lescott and Micah Richards. The key that the teams above us have is a selection of central defenders that can also play in other positions.

Smalling, Jones, Ivanovic, Luiz and Richards can either play as a full back or even midfield if required. A central defender that is versatile would be perfect for strengthening our squad.

Possible Candidates?

So who could fill that void?

With Gibbs and Monreal in the squad, the left-back position is well catered for (and considering Vermaelen can play there too) so a central defender that can also play right-back would be a fantastic addition to the squad.

The player would need to be young, relatively inexpensive and able to play in several positions.

So how about Dejan Lovren?

He’s only 23, was highly rated a few seasons ago and more importantly comes from the French League, almost a requirement for an Arsene Wenger signing. He currently players for Lyon and as well as being able to play in his main position of centre-back, he can also play as right or left back as required.

With Sagna looking more likely to leave Arsenal in the summer, a central defender that can play as right back would be useful, to give Carl Jenkinson some competition on the right.

A Ruthless Finisher

It is well reported that with the absence of Robin van Persie, the goals have been shared around the team, with Cazorla, Theo, Giroud and Podolski all into double figures for the season.

But in tight games (especially those with the Top 6 clubs) where we have struggled to score, a Van Persie would have been useful this season.

So who could be that signing?

If you look at realistic options, then we could be looking at Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He plays for St-Etienne and is a tall, powerful striker who was the second top scorer in Ligue 1 last season. He’s only 23 years old and that would give us time to settle him into London life while he finds his feet – and this is fine as we aren’t looking to immediately replace Grioud or Podolski – Aubameyang could easily be used alongside them in a rotation system which would keep all of them happy, and give us the chance not to over-use Giroud like we did last season.

Most of the top teams have 3/4 strikers now and with another finisher it would at least give opposing teams something else to think about if Plan A isn’t working.

Midfield Cover

With Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere struggling with injuries in the last campaign, they unfortunately cannot be replied upon next season. We have Mikel Arteta (who at times badly needed resting last year) and Aaron Ramsey as our only real true midfielders. We have Tomas Rosicky and Santi Cazorla who can both play a more deeper role if required but ideally they would be playing further up the pitch.

So who could be bring in?

With Mikel Arteta and Santi Cazorla already at Arsenal, it would be useful if we had someone from Spain in the middle of the park alongside them. So based on that theory, how about Benat Etxebarria?

He’s Spanish, a decent age (26 years old) and favours the defensive midfield position. The current Real Betis player has a superb range of passing, is skilful on the ball and has an eye for a good tackle.

Overall

So there you have it, some realistic transfer targets, based on Arsene’s previous transfer dealings ever since he came to Arsenal.

The big money buys like Rooney and Higuain are just not realistic. If you look at the vast majority of signings Arsene Wenger has ever made; Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Freddie Ljungberg, Robert Pires, Emmanuel Petit, Nwankwo Kanu, Alexander Hleb, Laurent Koscielny, Olivier Giroud, et al, then you will realise he never goes for proven class. He likes to take talented players with potential and give them that extra push to be world class. Players like Henry, Vieira and Pires were all very good players when they arrived at Arsenal, but it was only with us where they became truly world class footballers.

And Dejan Lovren, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Benat Etxebarria are all realistic signings. They’re all around the same age, have experience in the French league or have Spanish connections, and wouldn’t be extortionate prices. Arsene may have a war chest at his disposal but he will never in a million years waste it all on one or two players. Ever since he joined Arsenal it’s all been about value for money. And the signings (on the face of it) wouldn’t be the kind where Arsenal fans would be jumping around for joy (hand on heart, how many Arsene signings have you really been excited about?) and it would only be later on when they showed their class for Arsenal when you would realise Arsene has made an inspired purchase.
