Honestly, Can Arsenal Beat Barcelona In The Champions League? Vote Here!

The worst possible draw was Barcelona and in typical Arsenal fashion, that’s what we got.

The outlook looks bleak. They have Messi, Suarez and Neymar (as if you didn’t know already) who are in my opinion, possibly the greatest attacking combination for the last 30 years. Messi is Messi, a phenomenon, Suarez is unbelievably good and Neymar is quality as well. Any defence would struggle against them and to compound matters we’re missing Francis Coquelin.

So the big question is, are they unbeatable?

Well let’s look at their season so far.

In La Liga, they’ve played 15 games, winning 11, drawing 2 and losing 2. The two defeats were against Celta Vigo (4-1) and Sevilla (2-1), and their last defeat was at the start of October and they are currently on a 8 game unbeaten run.

Of those 8 games, they’ve racked up 24 goals, only conceding 6. However, they have drawn their latest two league games, drawing against Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna, so possibly some hope there.

In the Champions League, they are unsurprisingly unbeaten, winning 4 games and drawing 2, resulting in an overall goal difference of 11 (scoring 15 and conceding 4). Their highlight in the group stages was a 6-1 win over AS Roma.

So Barcelona look decent this season. But can Arsenal beat them over two legs? It’s difficult not to feel a bit pessimistic at the moment but I suppose there is a glimmer of hope.

We all know about the great escape when it comes to the Champions League but Arsenal also top their domestic league, winning 10, drawing 3 and losing 3 of their 16 Premier League fixtures so far.

Arsenal have it all stacked against them, with injuries in key areas so it will be vital that Alexis Sanchez is fit for those two games. Santi Cazorla and Francis Coquelin look like they are going to be short for the Barcelona games so Aaron Ramsey and possibly Mathiew Flamini might be our central midfield pairing. Jack Wilshere who was so good against Barcelona when we won 2-1 at home a few seasons ago would be a massive boost if he regains fitness by February.

Arsene Wenger has shown to be able to pull out spectacular results in the past against big sides (Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona, Bayern Munich just to name a few) but two legs against Barcelona is a mammoth task.

So can Arsenal somehow pull it off?

Why Arsenal Want Real Madrid In The Last 16

Arsenal came back from the dead last night after losing their first two Champions League group games and losing three from their first four.

But wins against Dynamo Zagreb and Olympiakos in their last two group games finished off the great escape. As we’ve seen from teams like Manchester United in Europe this season, no away game in the Champions League is a formality so Arsenal deserve a huge amount of credit for winning 3-0 in Greece and avoiding the dreaded Europa League.

So for Arsenal, we have the luxury of thinking about our next potential opponents in the knockout stages. Our possible opponents include Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Wolfsburg or Zenit St Petersburg (Chelsea and Manchester City topped their respective groups so we can’t play them).

So who would you want to face?

The obvious teams that will be picked by Arsenal fans would be probably a non-Spanish side. Barcelona are phenomenal and with a striking trident of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez they would be an extremely difficult to beat over one game, nevermind two legs.

People will also point out that Real Madrid are a team we want to avoid but I disagree – I think they would be the perfect team to play.

Yes, they have an array of superstars in their ranks but for me they are a team who are more about being individuals. As a team, when Arsenal are on it they are on it (we’ve beat Bayern Munich already this season) and I believe that we play better as a unit than Real Madrid are at the moment. They have Ronaldo who is all about himself and Bale has been mis-firing this season. At the back they are suspect and I just think that with Mesut Özil in scintillating form we can cause them problems.

Maybe I’m living in a dream world, thinking back to the days when Thierry Henry ran riot at the Bernabeu and scored that sensational goal.

Another reason why we should want Real Madrid is because it’s a glamour tie. People talk far too much about wanting to avoid the big boys – but for me there’s no point in being in the competition unless you have aspirations of winning it – otherwise you might as well stay at home.

Yes, Real Madrid are a massive team but if you want to win the competition then you have to beat the best. We’re not Floyd Mayeather so shouldn’t be afraid of the big teams (except for Barcelona, obviously).

One of the reasons why I love the Champions League is those special nights against the best teams. That’s what it’s all about and I would be confident of turning them over over two legs. Arsenal have shown this season they can dig in, fight and put in a team performance when it matters.

If we perform at our best we can beat Real Madrid, but of course if we didn’t turn up then we could end up embarrassed. The two games against Bayern Munich this season sum up how Arsenal can end up.

Theo Walcott or Olivier Giroud? Vote Here!

So far Arsenal have had a decent season, level on points at the top of the Premier League with 22 points alongside Manchester City, and although we’ve had an indifferent Champions League campaign, we did manage to beat European heavyweights Bayern Munich last week.

And things could be worse, as our friend Jose Mourinho could testify to.

But who should be Arsenals Number 1 striker?

Theo has certainly grown into the striking role this season, improving in every game. Olivier Giroud has also done well this season, despite being second fiddle to Theo for the most of our games this season.

Theo has scored 4 goals so far this season, in 9 games, while Olivier has scored 6 goals in 14 appearances. A few of those have been as substitute (for both players) so their records aren’t too bad. There was this statistic going around recently that Theo had 11 goals in 11 starts but that was slightly misleading as that went back to the 2013/2014 season as he was struggling with injuries last season.

Anyway, who do you think should be Arsenal’s first choice striker? And why?

Can Arsenal Win The Premier League? Vote Here!

So after 10 games, Arsenal are top of the Premier League (although Manchester City and Manchester United still have a game to play today in the Manchester Derby) and things are looking positive.

We currently have the best defensive record in the league, have 4 wins in a row and look like a team with a huge amount of confidence.

Our defence has improved dramatically this season – with Petr Cech the main reason why we have done so well recently. After he shaky start against West Ham United on the opening day of the season, he has looked phenomenal.

Football matches hinge on key moments and Petr Cech has always made the difference. John Terry along with a few other football pundits said that Cech would earn us an extra 12/15 points in a season and it would be hard to argue against it.

His ability is world class and against Bayern, he made a string of vital saves before we scored late on to win the game. And against Everton yesterday, with Arsenal protecting a narrow 2-1 lead, he saved well from ex-Barcelona player Gerard Deulofeu – that secured 3 points instead of just gaining 1.

Our backline looks solid, with Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin looking excellent defensively and offensively, and Mertesacker, Gabriel and Koscielny all look established and comfortable with which ever central defenders are paired together.

In midfield, we have an embarrassment of riches but it is upfront where the most encouraging signs are. Theo Walcott is improving in the role of lone striker every week and Olivier Giroud is also looking good, scoring on a regular basis despite having limited game time.

Arsene Wenger has pulled off a fantastic system regarding the striker role – he now has two real options and can rotate when needed. Theo has been performing well of late, linking up well with Özil and Sanchez, but Giroud has looked very good when called upon – Arsenal finally have a Plan A  and Plan B and Arsene can interchange these systems game by game or even during a match. These two distinct styles of attacking play both Theo and Giroud give us is invaluable over the course of a season, and will give opposing teams a real problem when trying to nullify our attacking threat.

And the other real advantage the Theo/Giroud options is that we should be able to keep both of our strikers fresh and fit throughout the course of a long season.

Arsenal look like they are finally in a position where Premier League glory can be achieved.

But what do you think?
