Arsene Wenger’s “Spin” No Longer Works

Arsenal fans will have noticed a trend when it comes to big players leaving the club.

Arsene publicly announced last summer that he was convinced that Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri would stay. He said about Nasri, who had a year left on his contract:

“Will he be at the club this season? I say yes. Will he sign a new contract? I hope yes but I’m not the only one to decide that.

“There is always speculation when a player has only one contract year to go and has not signed a new contract that he might leave the club.

“But Samir Nasri is very happy at the club and is committed to staying at the club.”

And about Fabregas before he went home to Barcelona:

“Yes, I am convinced Cesc will stay.

“It is as simple as that. I never speak about what’s happening behind closed doors. Cesc loves the club and hopefully we’ll manage.

“We know that this story for Barcelona goes on for years now and we have to close that and for ourselves to focus on the season hopefully with Cesc Fabregas.”

Weeks later they left for Manchester City and Barcelona.

It is quite telling that Arsene is so desperate that he is relying on the emotional side of his biggest players and going public with his intention to keep them, but the same players that love the club are still leaving.

And so to yesterday, Arsene said about Van Persie:

“We want to keep Robin van Persie at all costs, because we depend on him offensively.

“I have always supported him even in the hardest times, and I hope he will end his career at Arsenal.”

Not quite saying that he’s “convinced” he’ll stay, but close enough.

Then Robin releases his own statement, saying that he will not be renewing his current deal that ends next summer.

Just on Van Persie, I have to say I wish him all the best. Whenever I’ve seen him play he’s always given 110% in an Arsenal shirt and since he arrived he has totally engrossed himself into the club and the city. I’ll always smile when I hear his Dutch/cockney accent when he gives and interview, and even though he said he’s not renewing because he wants to win trophies it wouldn’t bother me that much if it was for the money. He’s been at Arsenal for 8 years and only has an FA Cup to show for it. A player of his quality deserves more and it’s sad that I think that way. I really do love Van Persie and he will be sorely missed. I didn’t care so much when Nasri left but Van Persie’s departure will be as sad as Fabregas leaving last year.

One big question is why do Arsenal get into a situation where the player only has one year left on his contract? It seems to happen a lot with Arsenal and I’m not sure why it keeps happening.

Do the players not believe in Arsene anymore? It must be hard trying to convince the same players year after year that we will win something and end up empty handed time and time again. We are a great football club but at the moment we just can’t compete with the teams right at the top.

  1. if rvp had played at least one full season over the last 8 years
maybe we would have won some trophies i am afraid one good seasonç
does not make him a great player and if he had any conscience
at all he would have stayed and paid back what he owed arsene

  2. I will be sorry to see VP leave as to me he is the last of the great players we had. I look at the squad now (even with the new signings) and see how Liverpool have been in the last ten years. A team that will flatter to deceive. It speaks volumes that we have lost Cesc, Nasri, Clichy and now VP due to all the players saying the club does not match their ambitions. The expression there is no smoke without fire comes to mind. Can all the players be wrong who have left or are leaving. I seriously believe that unless a change of policy in the clubs transfer strategy takes place I see the club dwindling into obscurity. The time now has come for a change in the management and the board. Others will shout at me for saying so but Mr Wenger please change your mind and take the Job managing France.

  3. Wenger is just doing a good PR job. He’s no mug & in each of those situations he must have known that the players were going. By keeping up the spin till the last minute it allows the club to attract replacements & keeps their prices down. Can’t blame RVP at all for wanting to go. It must be just as frustrating for him (as it is for the fans) to hear Wenger trot out the same old BS every year.

  4. Last season our possession stats dropped significantly. From being top of the Stats in 2010/2011, we were seventh overall last year 2011/2012. Away from home we were THIRTEENTH in possession. In fairness Arsene has bought forwards anticipating Robins possible move. He has, for whatever reason, delayed in the midfield department. How would we increase possession, and thereby give ourselves a chance of the prem, without a midfield maestro. Although I am unhappy Robin has left I can empathise with his disillusionment. Our team is still miles from challenging and Arsene must prove to the fans that he will build a team to excite and bring joy…and honours. If Wenger uses the money he has available we may still have a chance.

  5. It’s hard pill to swallow but what he says is right. When he watches Nasri & Clichy win Premier League straight after leaving must realise that could end career with just FA cup medal. Either Podolski or Giroud will have to fill in with 37 league goals just for us to stand still ..

  6. arsenal-steve – what are you cra*ing ?? We are top team in possession last year, home and away. But even if we weren’t , that dont indicated bad or good team. Plus top teams are around same values just few % more/less.

  7. I am from Holland and enjoy seeing Robin play for Arsenal. If he plays for Holland he is rubbish. So clearly the team is already build around him.
I am sorry, but now he behaves as an arrogant prat, as if any other club will always win trophies.

  8. It pains me to say it but the reason we end up with players with only 1 yr left on their contracts is that once they get good and bog clubs are interest they start to see they have more chance of silverware elsewhere. They see through Wenger’s spin. They see that really Wenger is getting paid a lot of money to make the owners a lot of money with low risk (wages paid to young players with higher sell on value). With good marketing they can fill the stadium and make millions without sinning trophies.
    Bummer.
They make more money out of families buying meals and soft drinks than men who are in the pub beforehand and only rush to the game at 5 to 3. This is the modern game. Gutted

  9. Um meant to write ‘big’ clubs not ‘bog’ clubs. However maybe its more accurate for the toerag teams that keep getting our top players! 🙁

saw some other mistakes, sorry – this is what I meant to write:

  10. IM sick of people saying van persie owes wenger he owes him nothing! fair enough he has had plenty of injuries but without him last year we probably would have finished outside top 10 we wouldnt even have europa league he has paid his debt and that debt is another covetous year of champions league football which wenger is holding onto with his tired hands
