Manuel Almunia or Jens Lehmann?

There are rumblings that Jens Lehmann could be fit for tomorrows clash with Sevilla in the Champions League, and even if those rumours are untrue the fact is Arsene Wenger will have a selection problem when Lehmann does eventually declare himself fit.

Who should be Arsenal’s number one?

By going on this seasons records alone, Lehmann has played three games and won two – but has also made two huge mistakes in the process. Almunia meanwhile has played four games and won them all.

Can you argue with that?

Some people and critics of Almunia in particular will point out the Spaniards ‘nervous’ presence while playing in the first team but he has made vital saves at vital times. And while I have never been his biggest fan, Almunia has only conceded twice. One of which was a complete fluke by Kanu and the other was from a set-piece.

Lehmann on the other hand has gifted both of the goals he has conceded.

While technically Lehmann is the far superior goalkeeper, is he the right choice?

Almunia might not be the most confident keeper but he seems to have that something. He reminds me of Red Nose’s son. Look at Kasper Schmeichel – whenever I’ve seen him play he has a tendency to flail at certain balls into the box but somehow his team keep winning and manages to keep clean sheets.

And if Almunia finally feels like he is the number one his confidence would skyrocket.

If Barcelona can win the league with Victor Valdes then Arsenal could just do something with Alumunia.

And I never thought I would ever say that.

Table-Topping Arsenal Are Absolutely Fabregas & Arsene’s ‘Soul Brother Handshake’ With RVP

What a fantastic North London Derby.

Arsenal, struggling with an injury to key defender Gallas and missing Senderos from suspension meant that Arsene had to make do with a jet-lagged Gilberto alongside Toure in defence. Fabregas was joined by Flamini in the middle with Abou Diaby on the left to add a bit of height and power to the midfield.

Both sides wanted to play football and in the end it was an open match.

And it was Spurs who opened the scoring when sloppy tackle from Gilberto resulted in a freekick which was well converted by Gareth Bale on 15 minutes.

But Arsenal look dangerous and created numerous chances.

Diaby was the culprit of missing Arsenal’s best chance of the first half, receiving the ball after some excellent work from Hleb but managed to smash his effort against the bar.

Hleb and Adebayor looked lively with Fabregas pulling the strings and both had opportunities saved by Paul Robinson.

And at the start of the second half, Spurs had fantastic chance to put the game beyond Arsenal when Berbatov dribbled past Almunia leaving just Toure to beat. But the Arsenal captain was exceptional and managed to steal the ball from the feet of the striker.

Then Sagna drove into the Spurs box and setup a wonderful chance for Adebayor, who managed to smash his effort high, wide and not so handsome.

But this young Arsenal team showed this new found determination they seem to have this season and found a way to claw there way back into the match.

A Fabregas freekick – which was like a carbon copy of Toure’s goal at Spurs last season – this time found Adebayor who coolly headed into the net against a flailing Paul Robinson.

Spurs had a couple of great chances to nick the lead once again, with Clichy saving a Berbatov chance off the line and Robbie Keane seeing his ‘offside’ chance well saved by Almunia. When Keane was put through the linesman incorrectly flagged for offside, and unbeknown to Arsenal was overturned by the referee. So huge credit to Almunia for making a crucial save when most goalkeepers would have been appealing for offside – which we now know wouldn’t have been given.

Then the character and resilience of Arsenal paid off when Cesc Fabregas scored a quite fantastic goal to put Arsenal 2-1 up. Spurs paid the ultimate price for backing off the seemingly prolific Spaniard who had time and space to measure his shot – and how. His effort whistled past Robinson into the top right hand corner.

Stunning comeback from Arsenal!

Then deep into stoppage time Cesc found himself with yet another assist when his pass was converted by the supremely confident Adebayor who scored an early contender for goal of the season.

He received the ball on the edge of the area and flicked it up to his left. With his next touch he smashed the ball into the roof of the net – who needs Thierry Henry?

The reaction of the third goal on the bench said it all. Arsene Wenger and Pat Rice – and the rest of the players on the bench, including Van Persie – had this togetherness we haven’t seen for a long time. When have you ever seen the ever-so-cool and calm Arsene Wenger engage (with Van Persie) in a cool Soul Brother Handshake?

Arsenal have been excellent this season, apart from a couple of needless goalkeeping blunders, and the opportunities Arsenal conceded to Spurs yesterday can partly attributed to playing a midfielder in central defence. Arsenal should have Senderos and Gallas back soon to partner Toure at the back so we will have even more steel in defence.

In attack Adebayor was sensational. Granted, he missed a couple of decent chances but he had the determination to keep going and he got his reward in the end with a vital equalising goal and his second which just gets better and better the more you see it.

People forget that he is still only 23 and many have questioned his ability. Well there’s no doubt that under Arsene Wenger he’s got every chance to join Vieira and Henry in becoming a player who can do special things for Arsenal. That goal was special for a few reasons.

The first was having the sheer audacity to even attempt something like that. For much of Ade’s Arsenal career, his playing technique has been almost ‘painting by numbers’. Adebayor is now looking like a younger Thierry Henry – trying new things – without the restriction of trying to instead find an iconic superstar with every pass. Would he have even attempted that with Henry alongside him?

Exactly.

And Fabregas is another who is really flourishing without Henry.

The goals are spread across the team and Cesc is one of the men who is taking advantage. 5 goals already this season – and goals from all kinds of areas – is hugely encouraging.

Last season was all about Cristiano Ronaldo but this could be Cesc’s year.

Arsenal seem to play with more freedom and look like a team who will be harder to beat this season. The young guns are ready to step up to the plate.

Getting excited?

Well you should be.

Derby Can Help Spur Arsenal On To Perfect Start

Well I’ve always said that the first 10 games of the new season will show us what Arsenal can do this year. We’ve played 6 already and won 5 of them, and the one game we did draw should have been won – except for a bad Jens Lehmann howler.

But the next 5 games are huge.

We play all of the matches this month in London and therefore we don’t have to travel (much) so this is the perfect time for Arsenal to really push forward and get a decent run going.

If Arsenal are unbeaten going into October then I could not be happier because it would show the new resilience this current squad seem to have.

That would be the perfect start to the season.

We’ve heard several players comment on how the team is together and won’t be bullied anymore.

This is the time to show it.

And the test continues on Saturday against Spurs at White Hart Lane.

Many people are thinking this game is a forgone conclusion but if football has taught us anything it’s that when you write off a team that’s when they are at their most dangerous.

And Tottenham are in total disarray.

They sacked Martin Jol, failed to bring in Ramos from Sevilla and then said they didn’t sack Jol after all! Then there were the stories of Berbatov leaving for United, Robbie Keane’s tantrum after being replaced by Defoe against Fulham and the late goals conceded to throw away the 3 points at Craven Cottage.

Then there’s their current form this season.

Spurs sit in 14th place, with 4 points. They have played one more game than us this season and have only beaten Derby, and drew to Fulham.

And then there’s our record in the North London derbies.

We have not lost against Spurs since 1999 which ended 2-1 at White Hart Lane.

Despite all this, Arsenal would be stupid to under-estimate Spurs and forgive me for being a little cautious come Saturday afternoon.

Facts & Trivia:

  • Arsenal remain unbeaten against Spurs in the last eighteen encounters. This includes 14 Premiership, 1 FA Cup and 2 Carling Cup matches.
  • Bobby Pires and Alan Sunderland share the most goals in an Arsenal shirt in North London derbies, with 8 a piece.
  • From the 155 games between Arsenal and Spurs; Arsenal have currently won 65, drawn 41 and lost 49.
  • David O’Leary holds the record for most North London derbies played, with 35 appearances.
  • While only 4 players have ever moved from Arsenal to Spurs, the number of Spurs players moving to Arsenal currently stands at 9.
  • Arsenal have clinched the title twice at White Hart Lane, in 1971 and also in 2004, when Patrick Vieira and Robert Pires scored to help Arsenal to the 2-2 draw they needed.
  • Vieira and Pires were also involved – and scored – in the highest ever North London Derby, when Arsenal won 5-4 at White Hart Lane in the 2004/2005 season.

P.S. The match doesn’t seem to be on Sky or Setanta so does anyone know where I can actually watch this game? (Edit: I’m in the UK)

Wenger Stays: Arsenal’s Greatest Ever Signing

Well with impeccible timing as always, Arsenal’s greatest ever manager Arsene Wenger has finally signed his contact extension which means he will stay until 2011 – and who knows maybe beyond that.

Since joining in 1996 from Grampus Eight in Japan, Arsene has transformed Arsenal from a decent team into a title-winning side. The 1997/98 season – his first full season in England – was sensational, and his revolutionary training methods and attitudes to football, nutrition and fitness have become the milestone for the rest of the Premier League clubs.

Has any other manager been so influential?

All Arsenal fans knew that the man would sign, but as long as the contact hadn’t been signed then you would get all the press speculation that he might leave.

But we all know he has some unfinished business.

Currently building his 3rd Arsenal team, it would be ridiculous to even suggest he would leave without seeing how all his hard work will develop and compete for honours.

The news of Arsene’s extension is a welcome diversion from all the rubbish surrounding David Dein and a possible takeover. Whatever happens in the future – until 2011 anyway – Arsenal will always be Arsene Wenger’s club.

And that is great news.

And as ever, the most important thing to Wenger is the team – so he announces he is staying during the boring International week so it doesn’t take anything from his players or their wonderful start to the season.

Arsene Wenger has contributed so much to football in the last 11 years he has been at the club and what he has done with Arsenal Football Club is simply astounding.

Who else in world football with a top football club has the balls to nurture a young side and play stylish football in the process, especially in an age where winning is everything?

Who else would pass up on proven superstars and create his own?

Arsene Wenger is literally one in a million.

August Review: Arsenal Oozing Cesc Appeal

With the extremely boring International week I decided that I would give my thoughts on the opening month of Arsenal’s campaign. The fact of the matter is that we have played 6 games (albeit one in September) and won 5, and should have won the other which was a draw.

Funnily enough though even with that start, everyone still thinks Arsenal have no chance in winning the Premier League.

We have played Fulham, Sparta Prague twice in Europe, Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

That’s 6 games, 12 goals, 5 wins and a draw.

People thought we would struggle for goals with the departure of Thierry, but the goals have been scored by 6 different players; with Fabregas (4), Hleb, Rosicky & Van Persie (2), Eduardo and Adebayor.

It seems the young guns have stepped up this season and have driven on from their focused and winning pre-season tournament wins at the Emirates and in Amsterdam.

There’s a winning mentality.

Another encouraging aspect is that in those games Arsenal have only conceded three times, which in all reality were due to fluke incidents. The first was a foolish attempt at a clearance from Lehmann against Fulham, the second was THAT mistake at Blackburn Rovers and the third was a complete freak of a goal conceded against Portsmouth from the idiosyncratic Kanu.

And to so easily push aside a Portsmouth team who gave Chelsea allsorts of problems on the opening day is positive to see.

You might say this is all well and good against these teams but what about the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea?

Well if last seasons performances at Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge and White Hart Lane without Thierry Henry are anything to go by then I would say things look promising.

And our rivals?

Well people would say Manchester United have been struggling after drawing their first two games and losing against Manchester City but the fact is that they’re still only 2 points behind us (although we have a game in hand). They’ve struggled to score goals without a recognised striker but with Louis Saha back don’t be surprised if they win their next few games by comfortable margins. They have a lot of injuries to the likes of Rooney and Neville, and Ronaldo is also set to return after suspension so Manchester United will be very strong.

Chelsea have also played one more game than Arsenal but sit level on points with us on 10.

They seem to be playing this brand of ‘more attractive’ football this season that has been demanded from owner Roman Abramovich and Chelsea look more vulnerable because of it. In the 3 games they have won it has been by the single goal, and they have conceded 5 goals in 5 games which for Chelsea is poor – considering Petr Cech’s record for keeping clean sheets is excellent.

They recently lost to Aston Villa and were lucky not to lose against Liverpool after that decision by Rob Styles. It must be said though that they do look a little lost when either Terry, Lampard or Drogba are out injured. But if anything Chelsea will get stronger as the season progresses and it would be stupid to even think about writing them off.

And Liverpool. They have been impressive.

In their opening 6 games they’ve racked up 16 goals and only conceded twice – and they have yet to concede a goal from open play. The only time Reina has been beaten was from the penalty spot, to Barry on the opening day and Lampard at Anfield.

It’s a long hard season and anything can happen but this is shaping to be one of the most exciting Premiership seasons for a long time.
