Will Arsenal Miss Lukas Podolski’s Influence On The Team?

It has been said that certain players might not have the influence on the pitch but they have influence in the dressing room, and Lukas Podolski is apparently one of those players.

Described as a “big personality” by Per Mertesacker and others, you wonder if the German’s loan move to Inter Milan might have consequences for Arsenal this season.

He had limited playing time but for the most part, he was regarded as a popular figure in the dressing room. Always smiling and always positive, he was a player who the other Arsenal players liked – if you looked on social media anyway.

They said the dressing room changed when Emmanuel Eboue left Arsenal, and we’ve lost captains in quick succession – Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, William Gallas, Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie and Thomas Vermaelen all left and they were all big personalities behind the scenes. And ever since Vieira left we’ve had trouble winning anything (bar the FA Cup success last season).

Does Arsene Wenger want a quiet and obedient dressing room? Is this one of the problems we have? Maybe Arsene Wenger doesn’t like people who speak up and have an opinion.

Time will tell if Podolski’s move will affect Arsenal’s fortunes, but for me he will be a big miss for our football club.

Should Arsenal Have Kept Lukas Podolski? Vote Here Now!

In a move which was never really a secret, Lukas Podolski has travelled to Milan to finalise a loan move to Inter, after Arsenal reportedly accepted an improved offer from the Italian giants.

But the question is should Arsenal have let him go? And why have we let him go?

The Lukas Podolski situation has always been a strange one for me. He is clearly a talented player, and allegedly Steve Bould came out and said that Podolski was the best finisher he has ever seen at the club – high praise considering Steve Bould was around when players like Alan Smith, Ian Wright, Nicolas Anelka and Dennis Bergkamp were at the club.

Podolski joined Arsenal from FC Koln in the summer of 2012 and was immediately thrust into the first team alongside new signings Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla – and made 33 appearances in the league alone. The season after he only played 20 Premier League games, and this season he only featured in 6. So clearly, there is an issue with him at Arsenal.

But what was it? He’s had limited playing time this season but did score a vital winner against Anderlecht in the Champions League and then scored a brace against Galatasaray in the same competition – and all the goals were clinical finishes. And for me, he is a player whose finishing is right up there with the very best – surely there’s a place for a player like him who can score when given the right service?

I’m sure most Arsenal fans are wondering if it was Arsene Wenger who had a problem with him or whether the system we used was just not suited to Podolski’s game. Olivier Giroud is obviously the preferred striker and with Alexis Sanchez in sensational form and Danny Welbeck willing to run for the team, I suppose Podolski was always going to be left on the sidelines. What is strange to me however is that during Giroud’s injury spell, Podolski had something to offer. Podolski has a hammer shot but when played wide on the left his delivery is excellent – the assists he has provided over the last couple of seasons for Giroud alone were top drawer.

Also, there are times when Arsenal lack a Plan B or just need to mix things up a little. Podolski (if used right) would be perfect for that but was never used. For a player of his ability, I find it strange that he hasn’t featured more this season. You don’t just turn into a poor player overnight and when you have seen Podolski play, he’s scored goals.

There’s no doubt that Lukas will be happier at Inter Milan where I am sure he will get much more playing time, but my regret is that we didn’t use him to his full potential – and for me he is someone that could definitely help the current Arsenal team.

But what do you think? Should Arsenal have kept Lukas Podolski at the club? Cast your vote below and leave your thoughts in the comments section!

Brand New Year But Same Old Story For Arsenal Fans

We enter a brand new year full of optimism a hope, but that was dashed pretty quickly against Southampton this afternoon.

Two mistakes by Szczesny meant that we lost against a Southampton side who weren’t at their best today. Southampton were without their best player Morgan Schneiderlin, but still managed to outfox Arsenal and create plenty of chances – Southampton striker Graziano Pelle had five shots on goal today including two attempts hitting the post and one was cleared off the line.

For Southamptons opener, Szczesny came flying off his line giving Sadio Mane a relatively simple opportunity to place his shot into an empty net. And for their second, the Pole kicked the ball to Tadic who accepted the gift and slotted in from close range.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Szczesny is always prone to making big mistakes and he’s done it again today. If you take away the mistakes the game was pretty even and both sides fashioned chances – so without the mistakes Arsenal might have got at least a point.

Arsene Wenger needs to man up and drop him for 5 or 6 games. Bring in Martinez or Ospina and give them a run in the team. Otherwise what’s the point of having backup goalkeepers?

But it’s the same old story with Arsenal isn’t it? Arsene Wenger is a fantastic manager who has done wonders for the club but we’re stuck in that awkward situation where no-one at the club knows what to do – Arsene Wenger is a manager who is clearly incapable of creating and nurturing a side good enough to win the Premier League, but at the same time he knows how to get Arsenal into the Top Four every single season.

And that’s the bottom line. Champions League football is the minimum a side like Arsenal should be achieving and Arsene Wenger is the man who can guarantee it every year. And at the end of the day, risking that to see if we can find a manager who can take us to the next level is too much of a risk to take for the Arsenal board.

That Was The Worst Arsenal Performance In 10 Years!

What do you say about that?

I have never been so angry and frustrated at an Arsenal performance in the last 10 years!

In the games when we got absolutely slaughtered against Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool last season, it was just comical. Today however it was just ridiculous. The performance level was unbelievably awful and coming away from a draw (and being minutes away from winning) was nothing short of a Christmas miracle.

It would be no exaggeration to say that Liverpool could have been 4-0 up at half time.

Arsenal were extremely wasteful, lethargic and looked completely lost. I cannot remember when we’ve played so bad. Against Newcastle it looked like we turned a corner but today it was painful to watch. We kept losing the ball and had no flow, passion or composure.

We panicked in possession and couldn’t string two passes together. If you looked at the statistics, Liverpool bend us over and sodomised us repeatedly over 90 minutes. If Liverpool could actually score goals, they could have had 7 or 8.

We drew 2-2 and it was down to a huge amount of luck. Liverpool completely dominated from the first minute and watching the game you knew that once Liverpool scored then it would be a complete white-wash. Arsenal lost the ball on a consistent basis and it was amazing that we lasted 45 minutes without conceding. Olivier Giroud lost possession with a lazy pass and The Iced Gem scored with a low shot into the bottom corner.

After that, it looked like we were in for a long afternoon but somehow, the Gods were looking down on us and we managed to score one of the least deserved equalisers in Premier League history.

Just before the break, Alexis Sanchez was tripped by Steven Gerrard. The Chilean clipped the ball into the box for Mertesacker to win, which was then headed back into the danger area by Mathieu Flamini. Mathieu Debuchy – the only Arsenal player to have a decent game – rose well and managed to score in the final seconds of the first half. Replays showed that the ball took a deflection off Martin Skrtel which wrong-footed Brad Jones.

A huge slice of luck for an Arsenal team who hadn’t been in the game at all.

The second half started and Liverpool attacked but couldn’t get through. After withstanding heavy Liverpool pressure finally Arsenal managed to string more than two passes together – and unbelievably Olivier Giroud scored. Kieran Gibbs drove forward and found Giroud, who over played a pass to Santi Cazorla. The little Spaniard somehow managed to retrieve the poor pass into the path of Giroud, who rifled the ball into the back of the Liverpool net between Brad Jones’s legs.

Three shots on target and two goals. Arsenal leading 2-1 gave a whole new meaning to smash and grab.

After that, we defended okay but repeatedly let Liverpool attack and attack and it was inevitable that they would eventually get through. A combination of luck and poor Liverpool finishing meant that we lasted until the 97th minute without conceding. But in the 98th minute, we gazed and watched while we let Skrtel rise high and smash in a header from a corner.

Why would you leave a player like that with a free header?

Today only Mathieu Debuchy, Santi Cazorla and Kieran Gibbs can hold their heads up high. The rest of the players were a complete disgrace. Chambers was all over the place, Oxlade-Chamberlain wouldn’t pass the fucking ball and Matheiu Flamini was running around like a headless chicken and almost costing us dearly – his poor positional sense let Coutinho pull the strings from deep over and over again.

Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez both tried but looked completely lost – probably because they were expected to accommodate Olivier Giroud and played in unfamiliar positions. Olivier Giroud didn’t play well at all and looked like the shadow of the player he can be – he took his goal well but apart from that did nothing.

I have never seen Arsenal give away the ball as much as they did at Anfield today, it was unreal and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Our defending was as bad as it has ever been and Arsene Wenger can count his lucky stars that Liverpool were toothless in attack – if we had been playing Manchester City, Chelsea or even Manchester United today the score would have been in double figures – and that is no exaggeration.

When you consider we were minutes away from winning the game if we did manage to take all three points it would have been the most underserving victory in Arsene Wenger’s reign. Christmas had come early for Arsenal when they found themselves 2-1 up but even we managed to completely fuck that up in the end.

The game ended 2-2 and I don’t know if I should be happy that we managed to get a point from a game we should have convincingly lost, or frustrated because we played probably the worst Liverpool side in living memory and couldn’t put in a half respectable performance. If Arsenal played to their maximum we could have taken Liverpool to the sword but in the end we completely bottled it and this performance probably warranted a 5-1 scoreline than last seasons debacle.

Why Liverpool Will Beat Arsenal Tomorrow Afternoon

The Arsenal v Liverpool game tomorrow is something I am looking forward to. As with all the big games, you can only be excited about them and the rivalry between Arsenal and Liverpool is still one of the great encounters. Sure, games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham are special but I would put the game against Liverpool right up there in the footballing calendar.

Maybe it’s because one of my earliest childhood memories was watching the Liverpool v Arsenal game with my father and seeing that amazing goal from Michael Thomas in the final seconds. I was fortunate enough to briefly meet Michael Thomas a long time afterwards and remember how much of a nice guy he was. He signed an autograph for me and really couldn’t have been a nicer bloke. Along with watching Thomas the Tank Engine episodes and playing football in the park, that goal is one of the most memorable childhood recollections I have.

You can’t deny that Arsenal v Liverpool games aren’t special.

In recent times, our fortunes at Anfield have been very mixed. Last season we travelled to Liverpool and got absolutely slaughtered 5-1. The season before we won 2-0 with goals from Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla, and the season before that we won 2-1 when Robin Van Persie scored a dramatic winner with only minutes remaining.

In the last 6 encounters at Anfield, Arsenal have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 1 – which all in all isn’t bad at all.

And one of the games we drew we completely threw away, which was the game Andrei Arshavin scored a phenomenal 4 goals – after only having 4 shots all game.

So onto tomorrow, and if you go on current performances then Arsenal are seemingly clear favourites.

But if you look at the last 10 Premier League games, this is how Arsenal and Liverpool have actually fared:

As you can see from my very hi-tech and fancy graphic, both Arsenal and Liverpool have had mixed fortunes in the Premier League. I think the reason why people seem to think Arsenal are in better form is because of the last couple of weeks – we’ve managed to beat Borussia Dortmund and Galatasaray in the Champions League as well as beat Newcastle United convincingly at the weekend. Liverpool on the other hand drew to European minnows FC Basel and Ludo Razgd in the Champions League, and lost heavily to Manchester United in their last league game.

But if you just put domestic form into account, there’s hardly and real difference there.

So don’t think Liverpool will be a push over.

Another problem Arsenal have is Brendan Rodgers is under fire from the media and Liverpool supporters, and will be desperate to turn things around as soon as possible. Unfortunately for us, he would have learnt a harsh lesson from the Manchester United game and will be looking to get the fans back onside with a big win over Arsenal.

With our defensive problems, players like Sterling will be a big threat.

Liverpool’s players will still be hurting from the criticism that has been thrown their way and if anything you will probably see a very defensive Liverpool (even at Anfield) who will be looking to catch us on the break – and unfortunately that is probably our biggest weakness, conceding goals on the counter attack.

For Brendan Rodgers this would be a low risk tactic and something he will be looking favourably upon.

If Arsenal want to get anything from this game, they are going to have to be patient, controlled and make sure they don’t go throwing men forward.

I can see goals in this game but Arsenal need to ensure they don’t buckle under the pressure – especially as they have a record of conceding late goals and letting leads slip, like they did against Anderlecht and Swansea.

My heart says Arsenal will win 3-1, but my head says Liverpool will beat us 2-1.
