Great Result For Arsenal, But Wigan Should Not Be Underestimated

Well I didn’t expect that to happen!

I was out today but saw Wigan were 1-0 up at half time against Manchester City in the FA Cup. Sunderland were in the same situation last week in the Capital One Cup Final and we all know how they turned out – so I expected a similar turnaround in the second half.

But to my surprise, I got home and it was 60 minutes and it was 2-0!

They say the FA Cup is the stuff of dreams but  with half an hour left, you still expected Manchester City to comeback as they attacked and attacked time and time again. Samir Nasri scored with 15 minutes left to play and that setup a tense 20 minutes. Wigan defended valiantly and I even tweeted that this is probably the most important 20 minutes in Arsenal’s season.

And Wigan held on to setup a FA Cup Semi Final at Wembley against Arsenal.

It was unbelievable stuff from Wigan and after beating Manchester City in the final last season, and now beating Manchester City at their own home Arsenal should be very wary of Wigan.

They may be playing in the Championship but don’t make any bones about it, they will give us one hell of a game and they have previous for causing upsets. Arsenal will need to be at 110% if they want to book their place in the final – anything less and Wigan will be there to take advantage.

With Hull City Tigers, Sheffield United and Wigan Athletic remaining in the FA Cup, Arsene Wenger finds himself in a situation where it is now expected that we end our 8 year trophy drought. Will Arsenal fans be disappointed if we win the FA Cup this season? I for one won’t be.

We have shown we can put in a real performance this season, but also shown we can be pedestrian and try and stroll through games. Wigan Athletic deserve our complete respect and they have shown time and time again that they are the ultimate giant killers.

We meet Wigan Athletic on the weekend of the 12th of April, and Arsene must make sure that his troops are ready for the battle that awaits.

  1. We have over a month for the semi final, so we have the chance to concentrate on all other competitions before then. It would be cowardly for us to just throw in the towel in the other competitions and concentrate on this. However, the importance of this competition to the psyche of the team can not be over-emphasized. We have to get this trophy drought demon behind us as a team. I know that Wenger values the EPL and CL above the FA cup but in the circumstances, he needs to go jugular for this one. If by a stroke of luck we do better than qualifying for the champions league in the EPL or advance beyond the last 16 of the Champions League, that would be a welcome bonus. For now, it is of utmost importance that we expunge the trophy drought demon by winning the F A cup. It will not be a stroll in the park, but if Wenger plans well and concentrates, it is well within realization.

  2. Wigan won’t be push overs come april 12th.we need to up our game & find a way to unlock their defence because they will keep it tight ,then wait for counter attack. Our play should be direct & penetratin’ not just passin’ the ball side-ways…well their is hope for a trophy this but will rather keep my fingers crossed till we get to the finals, hope so.

  3. I hope by that time when we play wigan, our injured players will be back & non to replace them with injury problems
