Arsenal’s Slim Title Hopes Dashed By Inexperience

We know that United and Chelsea are miles ahead of us this season but I like many Gooners still had that faint hope of maybe lifting the title come May. Call it blind faith but that’s what supporters are all about.

But unfortunately a poor result against Pompy at the weekend dashed even the most optimistic supporters hopes of success in the league this season.

The fact was that Arsenal were poor until Adebayor made his introduction 10 minutes into the second half but at this point Arsenal were 2-0 down and had a mountain to climb.

Why must we insist on giving teams the lead at home?

In the end Arsenal could have won it but it was clear that only playing well for 30 minutes is pushing your luck when you’re trying to win games.

And it was quite confusing seeing Aliadiere starting a game for us since he hasn’t even been on the bench recently. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t his last start for us in the league against Liverpool at Anfield in November 2003?

Anyway, Saturday saw Arsenal drop another 2 points and Liverpool even pipped us to 3rd place in the table. Arsenal usually have a poor Xmas period and can you see us winning our next few games?

The fact was Portsmouth had a striker crisis but they still managed to score 2 goals and get a draw against us. Yet again, an opposing keeper had a ‘great game’ at the Emirates and you have to ask yourself if these great performances by goalkeepers is just a co-incidence or simply poor finishing on our part.

Another question that has been raised is the rotation policy Wenger has employed over the last few weeks despite the fact that Arsenal have needed to win games to stop slipping down in the table. I know Henry and others are out but the key to consistency is to play your strongest side and win games. This rotation almost cost us against Wigan and cost us at the weekend against Pompy.

And why wasn’t Baptista even in the squad?

In other news, Cesc has basically told Cole to f*ck himself. Which in all fairness I couldn’t agree with more!

We travel to Liverpool to play in the Carling Cup on Tuesday which now seems to be a must-win game as it presents possibly the best chance of winning a trophy this season.

  1. Yes, after the away Carling Cup trip to anfield, we have:

    Blackburn at Home
    Away to Watford
    Away to Sheffield
    Charlton at Home

–Anything less than 12 pts would be terrible, even with AW rotating the squad. IF, and that’s a big IF, we do get the 12 pts, we may be closer to the leaders considering Chelski have: Wigan, Reading, Fulham and Villa; while Man-Ure have: Villa, Wigan, Reading and Newcastle – I figure Utd will drop a couple and Chelski will be on top come january. But considering Utd lost on Sunday, we’d only be 12 back if we’d won on Saturday – making the home draw that much tougher to take.

  2. I think your headline is wrong mate. We lost point against Pompey, Villa, Boro, Fulham & West Ham because of two major errors, both by our God Arsene. (1) Kolo, who we all love has made more cock ups this year than all his pervious year added together. His height was our undoing Saturday, and it left us once again with a chasing game. Senderos would have nodded that away and physically dealt better.

    (2) Team selection, again! for gods sake how do you pick Alliadierre Or Freddy before Adebajor & Walcott based on form. Please dont give me the rotation crap we keep hearing….most Manure & Chelski players have played more games than our lot. Also we now know for certain that Arsene has a blind spot re; our midfield…..gone are the days when we could put out some hardnut but skillful players like Viera / Petit & Edu to protect our defence. So as Ive said TOO MANY times, we have the players but AW will not use them.

Tell me what team would like to line up against :-

    Lehmann
    Eboue Senderos Djurou Clichy.

    Midefield = Toure & Silver

    Fabrigas & Rosicky.

We then have a choise of forwards friom: Henry, Van P, Walcott, Hleb, Adebajor, and add Bentner & Stokes to come back.

I also love the fact that we have Diaby, Gilbert & Luaren to come back soon so as I say , we have the players but they are not being picked in the positions that would make us a great defensive unit that could spring into attack at great pace & power.

The other players ie: Freddy, Alliadierre, Flamini, should be sold to finance the purchase or Barnes (derby) Bale (saints ) and Kirkland (Wigan) all brits and all very talented.

  3. Hope you noticed my error….I meant Gallas to replace Silver and to give him and Fabrigas a rest. That is where we can rotate. Anytime we get another defender injury, either of the midfield strong men can fall back. It also means that Kolo & gallas can attack when they want and I would predict that they would score a good 20 goals a season between them if not more.

Thats it……all Im asking for is the team that looks exciting but so strong that others would not be looking forward to playing us.

  4. we certainly need more physically bigger players in the team. taller players will defend set pieces and score them as well and these days so many goals come from that source and we are just ignoring it.

  5. I’d like to see Toure and Gilberto in midfield – Kolo obviously has an eye for goal and if Gallas, Senderos & Djourou are all fit then Kolo gives us that physical presence in midfield. But I doubt Arsene will do that and stick with Freddie!

My ideal team (injuries permitting) would be:

    Lehmann

    Eboue – Gallas – Djourou – Clichy

    Hleb – Toure – Gilberto (c) – Rosicky

    Fabregas/Van Persie

    Henry
