It’s Just The Same Old Story…

I’d had a bit of time to think about this evenings game against Manchester City and I’m more annoyed than anything else with the defeat – mainly because every Gooner could see it coming from a mile away.

You knew it was going to happen!

Arsenal dominated the first half, wasting 5 or 6 great opportunities – with the less than sharp Thierry the main culprit.

And just like against Aston Villa and Dynamo Zagreb, Arsenal didn’t have the cutting edge and once again were scared to shoot on goal!

Arsenal had most of the ball in the second half but Man City keeper Nicky Weaver didn’t have a save to make!

What the hell is wrong with Arsenal – does Wenger dish out punishments if our players shoot outside the area?

And the worst thing was Manchester City weren’t even that physical. I dread to think what the hell is going to happen once we play teams like Everton, Bolton and Manchester United.

When a team dominates the game so much and doesn’t take their chances the opposition will ALWAYS get a chance to nick a goal.

ALWAYS.

And so it proved on the 41st minute.

A long diagonal ball played to Trevor Sinclair caused all the problems, and the inexperienced Justin Hoyte watched the ball but didn’t know where the player was.

And he succeeded in hacking down Sinclair for a penalty kick.

It was obvious Joey Barton was going to score – it was virtually their first chance of the entire game!

How many times in the past have Arsenal been left ruing missed chances?

Far too many times!

And the second half was the same old story – plenty of attacking possession but no desire to shoot and test the keeper.

The only player willing to shoot on goal in the second period was Robin Van Persie!

You may think I am over-reacting but unless something happens then we’re in for a very, very tough season.

Arsenal have only one way of playing and if teams play deep and with 8/9 men behind the ball they know Arsenal will not get through.

And can you blame them?

Days like today have happened far to often and Arsenal have to learn to score a scruffy goal!

Arsenal play a quick, slick passing game and without a player who can actually head the ball teams will play the same way against us. Too many times the ball is wide and instead of crossing it we play the ball inside and face a brick wall of defenders.

With players like Bergkamp, Pires, Vieira and Freddie at their peak this way of playing wasn’t a problem – we could keep chipping away and you knew we would eventually score.

But with the current personell Arsenal have to play differently but there are no signs of this happening. We are not the same team we were 2 seasons ago and the question is can Arsenal change the way they play?

We’ll have to wait and see…

Arsenal Win & Chelsea Lose? Yep, That’s Right…

Arsenal Win At The Emirates!

A good night all round for Arsenal in Europe and in The Premiership.

The Gunners beat Dynamo Zagreb 2-1 last night and won the tie 5-1 on aggregate – although it was Dynamo who took the lead through de Silva on 12 minutes.

Arsenal are going to take a few games to settle at their new home and we haven’t lost there yet which is the most important thing.

It was an average performance from Arsenal and nothing more really. Robin Van Persie in particular stood out as he displayed his impressive skills and a brilliant pirouette on 26 minutes created a chance from an acute angle which was saved by Dynamo keeper Carlos Santos de Jesus (what a name!).

And only a minute earlier van Persie was denied a goal when his shot was amazingly deflected by Cvitanovic onto the bar and over the goal! Crazy stuff!

But with 13 minutes remaining, Freddie latched onto a Van Persie freekick to head Arsenal the equaliser. And then on 90, Mathieu Flamini who looked like a left back playing in central midfield, grabbed the winner to give Arsenal their first competitive win at the Emirates.

I didn’t know any of The Premiership scores until I watched Match of the Day last night – and was I shocked!

Chelski were winning 1-0 with only 10 minutes to go when Boro came back and scored a couple of goals to give the Russians their first defeat of the season.

Alan Hansen made a good point about how Chelski looked particularly vulnerable from crosses as that’s how Boro managed to scored their goals. Chelski would probably look more solid with William Gallas instead of Ricardo Carvalho at the back wouldn’t they?

Apparently Jose Mourinho was absolutely livid last night. Good news all round then!

Manchester United looked impressive yet again with an easy 3-0 win over Charlton. From the highlights Scott Carson made some good saves and United hit the woodwork at least 5 times so the scoreline could have been much worst for the home team.

Hopefully The Premiership race will be a bit closer this season!

The Good, The Bad & The Ashley Cole…

I F*cking Love It When Gilberto Scores!

It’s been a few days since our Premiership opener against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium and while most Gooners (including myself) predicted an easy 3-0 win, Martin O’Neill had other ideas and played how most teams play against Arsenal – very defensive and very compact.

I’m not going to complain because if there is a system you can use to get a result then you have to do it. It’s up to us to come up with a way around it.

To be fair, Arsenal had enough clear chances to win comfortabl but unfortunately most of the chances seemed to fall to Eboue instead of any one of our attacking players! C’est la vie…

But the highlight of the game was the introduction of Theo Walcott after 73 minutes.

He looked like a brilliant player and according to Myles never lost the ball! Amazing!

And it was his cross that gave Gilberto the opening to smash in an emphatic equaliser!

One of my favourite sights is Gilberto scoring a goal. Remember when he scored against FC Thun in the Champions League last season?

Just like on Saturday, he went totally berserk!

It’s just a massive release and I love seeing it! It shows he cares, it shows he wants to win and it’s just how the other 60,000 Gooners are feeling inside the stadium!

Off the pitch however, it’s the same old story with Cashley Cole and no-one is any the wiser on what the hell is going on. I bet I’ve just given it the kiss of death now and he’s probably just joined Chelski as soon as you’ve read this.

Wenger has told Reyes to forget the Real Madrid move as it isn’t going to happen. I said a while ago that I couldn’t really see it happening, but then Wenger could be just playing hardball.

Then the William Gallas story. It’s clear we’ve made a bid for the versatile defender and at 29 I’d say he’s worth no more than £5/6 million. But there are rumours that Chelski want to swap him for Ashley Cole!

I’m not even going to dignify that rumour with a response…

Last Night Still Hurts. My God It Hurts…

Last night it was a hard defeat to take. I didn’t and just couldn’t sleep at all last night thinking about the game.

If Barcelona had beaten us 5-0 and completely battered us it would have been much easier to take. But to be within 14 minutes of the biggest prize in club football is demoralising.

To play with so much passion and drive and to still lose was devastating. Arsenal started the brighter, and up to the sending off pretty much dominated the game. Henry had two great chances and only an alert Victor Valdez prevented Arsenal taking a much deserved lead.

But then on 17 minutes the game totally changed.

Once I saw Lehmann pull down Eto’o I knew he’d be sent off. And I won’t begrudge the referee for giving Jens an early bath. I know a lot of people were saying that they should have played advantage and let the Barca goal stand, but the referee didn’t allow any advantage and blew up early. Once that happened there was only one outcome.

Despite that though, what I will say is that the referee had a terrible game last night. To book Henry for winning the ball off Van Bommel was a disgrace. Then how Marquez, Puyol and Van Bommel did not see at least a yellow for their persistent fouling was unreal.

Apparently this was the same referee that sent off Chelsea’s Del Horno against Barcelona’s Messi earlier on in the competition.

But ironically his inadequate refereeing led to our first goal. Eboue linked up well with Henry and Hleb on the right hand side, nutmegged Puyol and pretty much dived to win a freekick.

From the resulting freekick, Henry delivered a sublime cross into the area for Sol Campbell to emphatically head into the Barcelona net.

1-0 to Arsenal!

I have never celebrated a goal like I did last night. Sol needed to put in a great performance and he stepped up to the plate when we needed him and he got us that vital goal.

After that it was a brave performance from the lads, and although defending for most of the game managed to carve out a couple of great opportunities to kill the game off.

Henry did have a big, big chance which most people would say was the turning point of the game. As he said himself though, at that point he was running on empty. He had been running for everything and I can’t blame him for not scoring – he was dead. He couldn’t feel anything in his legs anymore.

To be leading in the biggest club competition in the world until 77 minutes with 10 men is an awesome achievement. Could anyone else have done that?

But the fact is Barcelona lifted the trophy after 98 minutes, and as much as it pains me to say it I’d like to congratulate Barcelona. And boy does that hurt. God it hurts.

Arsenal can be proud in the fact the couldn’t have done any more to win the Champions League. They played excellently and stood tall when they had 10 men.

But at the moment it feels like second place is nothing – and it is a bitter pill to swallow.

I’ve had enough of talking about the game – below are the player ratings:

Jens Lehmann: 5/10
Coped well from shots from Guily and Deco before being dismissed. He was the man against Villarreal but against Barcelona his judgement failed him and gave Arsenal a real uphill battle after his sending off.

Emmanuel Eboue: 8/10
Ran for everything and didn’t let the side down. Maybe should have been closer to Eto’o for the first goal instead of playing offside but handled Ronaldinho well.

Sol Campbell: 7/10
Good performance and managed to get that vital goal that 10 men needed. It gave Arsenal something to hold on to and gave us hope that Champions League glory beckoned.

Kolo Toure: 9/10
Awesome yet again. Won every tackle and fought with heart and desire.

Ashley Cole: 7/10
Apparently played Eto’o onside for the sending off but despite that played well. Like most of the players could really attack once we were down to 10 men.

Alexander Hleb: 7/10
Showed good skill and running and once the sending off in the 17th minute had to help back and his offensive threat suffered. Had a big chance in the second half to settle it and should probably have done better.

Cesc Fabregas: 5/10
Not one of his best games, and suffered because of the sending off. Couldn’t risk pushing forward as he would have liked and couple impose himself at all in the game. Out bullied by Van Bommel and Edmilson.

Gilberto Silva: 9/10
The invisible wall held out for so long and did brilliantly to keep Barcelona at bay. In the end they had to go around him through the wings to score.

Freddie Ljungberg: 9/10
As usually fought and ran for every ball in defence and attack. Carved out a chance for himself which was saved well by Valdez. Couldn’t have asked any more from the Swede. He was cynically fouled on a regular basis but the Barca players were rarely punished.

Robert Pires: 4/10
Not enough time to make an impact. Had to make way for Almunia’s introduction and was a sad end to a brilliant Arsenal career.

Thierry Henry: 9/10
A real captains performance. Led from the front, was excellent in the first 15 minutes – carving out two great chances for himself. Looked really up for it and even when Lehmann was dismissed he ran for everything. Missed a big chance late in the second half but by that time had no legs left. Blasted the referee and Barcelona players for lack of sportsmanship and really deserved better luck in his hometown.

Manuel Almunia: 8/10 (for Lehmann 17)
Hadn’t played a competitive game for around 4 months but kept us in the game with a great save from Eto’o just before the break. Made a string of good saves and was unlucky on the two goals Barcelona scored.

Mathieu Flamini: 6/10 (for Fabregas 73)
Got the final appearance he deserved but couldn’t really get with the pace of the game. Valiant effort to stop Belletti’s winner and was agonisingly close to doing so.

Jose Antonio Reyes: 5/10 (for Hleb 85)
Came on too late to make any sort of impact. Should have started the game in my opinion with the pace and energy he offers.

What Was All The Fuss About?

So Arsenal win at their last ever match at Highbury, finish fourth and overtake Spurs into the final Champions League spot. Even with a piss-poor penalty fron Teddy Sheringham.

Ever in doubt?

The best possible send off to Highbury – emotional stuff!

Do I believe in fate?

Well Spurs went down with food poisoning, which when I first heard I thought it was a ploy to beat West Ham – if they successfully had the game re-arranged for later in the week you could guarantee that Pardew would play NO first team players, especially with the FA Cup Final only next weekend.

But surprisingly the game went ahead, and Spurs had to play at Upton Park. I thought Spurs would be successful in trying to con the FA and the Premier League.

But for once the authorities actually stood strong!

At Highbury it was a game no Arsenal fan could ever forget – it had action, goals, suspense – everything!

Arsenal went 1-0 up after 7 minutes thanks to Robert Pires, after a knock-down from Sol Campbell from a Cesc cross.

But then Arsenal conceded after minutes of the re-start, thanks to a goal from Paul Scharner who was an Arsenal fan as a boy. What a moment for him as he scored at the final ever game at Highbury.

And on 34 minutes Wigan went ahead from, it has to said, an audacious from David Thompson who saw Lehmann out of position and cleverly clipped his freekick into the near post.

But if anyone was going to be the star of the show then it was best player in the Premiership, captain of Arsenal and all-round genius Thierry Henry, who scored a hattrick for the perfect Highbury send off.

His first was a classic Henry goal, after being fed by fellow Frenchman Pires. The second was a cheeky goal, taken from a David Thompson pass-back. Then finally to seal the win and the 4th place in the Premiership, Freddie won a penalty which Henry converted with aplomb.

Could today have been any better?

It was the perfect day, the perfect send off and the perfect result.

I’ll see you in Paris!
