Giroud Shows That He Is Not Good Enough

Arsenal (0) – (0) Chelsea
The Emirates Stadium, London
Barclays Premier League

It was a frustrating night for Arsenal fans, as Arsenal struggled to break down a stubborn Chelsea side.

We knew Chelsea would be compact, solid and try and hit us on the break. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the answers and in the end, we were lucky probably not to lose.

Frank Lampard rattled the bar in the first half, and Chelsea carved out a decent chance before the break but Willian’s shot was tame.

It took 85 minutes for Arsenal to register a shot on target, and when it came Olivier Giroud couldn’t convert the chance. He also had another golden opportunity to score about 5 minutes before that, but sliced the ball well wide.

In games like this, when it’s tight you need your strikers to take these chances. He had two decent scoring chances and missed both. The top teams have that one player (Suarez, Aguero, Van Persie, Lukaku, etc.) who can score when your team needs it.

At a time when teams are giving us tougher games, Olivier Giroud has shown he isn’t good enough. Against Everton, he had chances to win the game and the same happened tonight – but unfortunately the same happened again and he didn’t take them.

He adds a lot to the team but his finishing isn’t good enough. If we had Suarez or Aguero up front, they would have buried those chances. They were difficult chances but ones you would expect the top players to score. Even Podolski would have made a better effort of the left-footed volley.

As it stands, we couldn’t break down a stubborn Chelsea team who had the better attacking possession and chances. You know how Jose Mourinho is going to setup his team which is not to lose, and they did exactly that. Arsenal needed to step it up a gear but it never came, and I don’t understand why Podolski didn’t come on for Giroud for the last 20 minutes or so. It would have given us that little extra boost we were lacking in the final minutes.

Mike Dean lived up to his reputation of being a complete cunt and made some shocking decisions. He gave Mikel a yellow card for almost breaking Mikel Arteta’s leg, he failed to give a penalty when Walcott was clearly fouled in the box, and overall had no control over the game.

He obviously has a massive bias against Arsenal and he didn’t disappoint tonight. We all know that we’ve only won one game with Mike Dean officiating in the last few seasons, and tonight was another game where we were never going to get the breaks.

Overall, a frustrating night made worse by poor refereeing and the fact we failed to perform how we can do. Too many players were below par and that played into Chelsea’s hands. Tomas Rosicky was our best player, and our back four were good, but apart from that we were poor and didn’t deserve the three points.

Can We Actually Beat Chelsea? Arsenal’s “Massive” Test Tonight

A lot has been made about tonight’s game, and it is something I am really looking forward to. Which ever way you look at it, it is a massive game. The team that usually tops the Premier League table at Christmas goes on to win the title, so that’s something big to aim for. But like in life, things are never straight forward and for that to happen, we need to overcome a Chelsea side managed by Jose Mourinho.

It has been well-reported that in the previous nine matches between Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho, the Arsenal manager has failed to win a single encounter. And this season in the Capital One cup when the two “reserve” sides met, Arsene was clearly out of his depth tactically. Arsenal never looked like winning that game and Chelsea never looked like losing it.

The problem we have tonight is that although Jose Mourinho has been moaning recently about dominating games but not scoring enough goals (because of his misfiring strikers), that makes no difference to tonights game. Like it or not, Mourinho knows exactly how to play against an Arsene Wenger side and the way they play, they can use their tactics and formation to score from midfield. Against us earlier in the season, it was Juan Mata and Cesar Azpilicueta who scored the decisive goals.

The other argument for Chelsea getting a result against us is that we’ve only had “two big games this season” and lost them both – against Manchester United and Manchester City. While I’ll admit that we were well below par in both of those games, we have still beaten Liverpool, Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham this season, so I don’t necessarily agree with that sentiment.

But I do think this is a massive test for Arsenal. If we want to believe we can win the Premier League title this year then for me, this is a must win game. Some will say it’s just 3 points and we’d still be within touching difference but if Chelsea win it will give them a huge amount of confidence going into the new year, and that is something we don’t want. Because of the results the way they’ve gone this weekend, if Chelsea do win then we could finish the weekend 4th in the table, after being top for most of the season.

So how is Arsene going to play this tonight?

Mourinho is a clever manager who doesn’t think twice about making radical changes to his team during any time of a match.

And they have the players with quality in their squad who can hurt us from anywhere.

You would have to think that Arsenal will have to put in the performance of their lives tonight to convincingly get the win. It will have to be a complete performance where no-one makes any mistakes – because as we saw in the Capital One Cup, any mistakes we make will be taken advantage of.

Against most sides in the league, we could go toe to toe with them and give them a game, but with Chelsea, they are dangerous, intelligent and unfortunately for us, they will raise their game for their visit to The Emirates and won’t be putting in a below par performance like they did against Sunderland in midweek.

Poll – Which Former Player Would You Have Back At Arsenal, And Why?

For the first time in about 10 years, we’ve managed to hold on to the important players in our squad and finally recruit a world class player to strengthen the team from the season before.

And the result of that is on December 18th, we are top of the Premier League table – somewhere most of us could have only imagined we’d be during the long summer months.

But Arsenal recently have been slightly off the boil. We have had a lot of tough games, both in the league and in Europe, and the tiredness is beginning to show. There’s no doubt that spending in the January transfer window is a necessity if we want to continue our already excellent season, as players such as Ramsey and Giroud look in need of a rest.

Then I starting thinking, what if over the last 5 seasons we didn’t need to sell one of our players?

What if the circumstances were slightly different, and we didn’t need to sell one player over the last few years? Which player would you have picked?

Below, I have created a poll and I thought it would be interesting to see which former Arsenal player Arsenal fans would gladly see back at Arsenal, and why.

Is Andre Villas Boas A Terrible Manager? Did He Deserve The Sack?

Andre Villas Boas was sacked yesterday in the aftermath of the heavy defeat to Liverpool at White Hart Lane. Tottenham Hotspur have spent £107 million this summer and I assume that the Tottenham board feel like the team are under-acheiving.

While the situation down the road is hilarious, I do raise a serious question – did Andre Villas Boas deserve the sack?

I ask because while they’re having a terrible time of it at the moment, they are only 8 points behind league leaders Arsenal, and his win percentage has been well-publicised as the best of any Premier League Tottenham manager.

He was hugely successful at Porto, winning the Europa League, Portuguese league and Portuguese cup. Since then however, he’s had disastrous spells at Chelsea and now Tottenham.

The problem is he’s never been at a team for more than 2 seasons. He was at Academica for one season, Porto for one season, Chelsea for less than one season and Tottenham for a season and a half. He’s never built for the future.

And critics of AVB always find flaws in his Europa League success. On the road to the title, he never played a side from England, Italy, France, Germany or Holland, and only one from Spain.

And others will point out that they only “almost” achieved 4th spot in the Premier League this season because of Gareth Bale.

So what do you think? Is he a talented manager who was shown the door too early?

Or is he vastly overrated and too young to be considered a top manager?
