“Smug” Untold Arsenal Blog Probably Shouldn’t Be So Smug Anymore!

Just over 2 years ago, I wrote a post entitled “Olivier Giroud is f*cking awful. Why Arsenal need to get rid of him“. It was a post which funnily enough, given our recent plight, still resonates even 2 years on.

The fact of the matter is he is not good enough for a club that has aspirations of winning the Premier League or Champions League.

You need a world-class striker to win the major honours and I feel like I’ve made this point a million times. Manchester City have Aguero, Manchester United have Rooney and Martial, Chelsea have Diego Costa, Liverpool have Sturridge (sometimes) and even Tottenham have Harry Kane. Okay, some of those are not world-class, but they are at least big players who score on a regular basis (bar Costa obviously in a struggling Chelsea side, but last season when they won the league he scored for fun).

But Olivier Giroud? It’s fair to say he wouldn’t get in any Top 6 team.

Which brings me to Untold Arsenal. I don’t know who they are and never read their blog, but they published an article in January which has only just been brought to my attention. They ended up referencing the aforementioned blog post I wrote about Giroud (which fair to say, was not the most complimentary) and essentially mocked my post.

The “smug” Tony Attwood (he actually included the “smug” part in his name) couldn’t contain his smug-ness at those protesting that some people had the audacity to claim Olivier Giroud is shit. He cites a lot of facts and figures, including one which claims that only Lionel Messi has a better goals to minutes ration and that Olivier Giroud’s scoring record is better than Cristiano Ronaldo’s?

Anyway, he essentially laughs at those who dared to question Olivier Giroud’s quality and mocks those who think he’s crap.

The funny thing in all this is that “Smug Tony Attwood” wrote this article only 2 months ago. We can all agree I think that Olivier Giroud is nowhere near good enough for Arsenal yet I saw this two years ago! He “smugly” posts two years later and still gets it completely wrong!

This is the “amazing” striker that hasn’t scored in his last 12 games?

So I’m not sure you should be so “smug” any more, Tony.

Francis Coquelin Is A Hero, Not A Villain

The interview on Arsenal player with Francis Coquelin is painful to watch. The player is clearly devastated about his red card and it’s clear that Arsene Wenger probably bollocked him for diving in like he did for the second yellow card. There’s also hints (although Arsene hasn’t directly said it) that Wenger places some blame on the young Frenchman for Arsenal not winning the match.

For me though, Coquelin is not a villain or to blame for the result. He is one of the very few players that have given 110% when he’s been on the pitch. He is one of a handful of players who can come out with his head held high from recent weeks.

There have been too many players under-performing and Coquelin isn’t one of them. And he came out in his interview and said he genuinely thought he could win the ball. Clearly he was miles away from it but he’s never shown to be a reckless player and in fairness the way Arsenal play means he’s probably more exposed than other defensive midfielders.

Francis Coquelin is a real leader and in this current Arsenal squad, should be considered as a future captain because there are few other leaders in the dressing room.

Tottenham Completely Bottle It And Were Lucky Against Arsenal!

Before the game, it was billed as the biggest North London Derby and the pressure on Arsenal to get something from the game was massive. With two poor performances against Manchester United and Swansea City, Arsenal were struggling badly and an in-form Tottenham Hotspur, at White Hart Lane, was the last thing we needed. They did lose to West Ham midweek but prior to that had won 6 Premier League games on the bounce – they were certainly the in-form team going into this match.

But what happened was Tottenham completely bottled it. Playing at home in front of their own supporters, they had the perfect chance to put the final nail in Arsenal’s coffin. And to make matters worse for Arsenal, they gave them a huge helping hand.

Arsenal looked solid for the most part in the first half and took the lead after some excellent play from Danny Welbeck and Hector Bellerin. The Spaniard’s cross found Ramsey inside the box and his back-heel goal was exquisite. Arsenal went into half time 1-0 up and we looked more than comfortable.

But then Tottenham had a ridiculously huge amount of luck as everything went for them and the sequence of events gave the home team the perfect opportunity to not only beat Arsenal but to knock their fiercest rivals out of the title race.

But fortunately for us, Tottenham do what they always do which is lose their bottle when it matters.

Already on a yellow card, Francis Coquelin dived in on Harry Kane and received a second yellow for a late challenge. No arguments about the sending off but it meant we had it all to do with 35 minutes left of the game to play.

Tottenham obviously pushed for a goal and a very very fortunately bounce from a corner found Alderwhatever and he had a tap in from close range.

With Arsenal heads down Tottenham had a perfect chance to kill the game off and a curling effort from Harry Kane put the home side 2-1 up. After that, it was hard to see how Arsenal would get back into this game – 2-1 down against Tottenham away from home, and with only 10 men.

It would have taken a miracle to get anything from this game.

Fortunately, Tottenham do what they do best and bottled it. Alexis Sanchez snatched a hugely important goal on 76 minutes and we had a golden chance to win it when Aaron Ramsey found himself through on goal with seconds remaining. But it wasn’t to be and to get a draw from such a dire situation that we found ourselves in was a huge result for Arsenal.

The positives we can take from this performance and result mean we can definitely overcome Tottenham in the league and see how close we can get to Leicester.

Tottenham on the other hand will have a lot of regrets from the game, ruing a fantastic chance to cement their title credentials and gain vital ground in the title race.

Arsenal Can Still Win The Premier League! We Just Have To Believe!

Arsenal’s form this season has been patchy, and not that of a championship winning side. We all remember the 1997-98, 2001-02 and 2003-04 seasons and they all had the same characteristics – players who had massive belief, fight and desire, as well as a huge hunger to win. Added to that they knew the importance of the team, and were fighting for each other on the pitch. When you think of Arsenal successes, you instantly think of Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Tony Adams, Martin Keown, David Seaman – players who were gifted footballers but also leaders on the pitch.

In our title winning seasons, it could be argued that we always put out 11 leaders on the pitch every weekend.

This season though we’ve been poor and almost stuttered to 3rd place in the league, which is familiar territory for Arsenal fans and the last 10 seasons in particular have just been a series of groundhog days.

We have all kinds of problems on and off the pitch. Off the pitch we have a stubborn manager who refuses to spend (only £15 million this season) when we have all the resources to compete with the biggest transfers. Arsene’s argument is that he doesn’t want to overspend – but what about the loyal Arsenal fans who overspend every week! The fans paying crazy ticket prices home and away, have to travel all around the country and also buy over-priced merchandise from the club – the whole ethos of the club is ridiculous.

On the pitch it’s not much better. We have team of cowards, and a distinct lack of leadership on the pitch. We have a manager who is tactically inept, and doesn’t know how to change things during the game, making strange substitutions and playing out of form players over young, hungry ones.

Yet, we are “only” 6 points behind the league leaders:

With 10 games of the season to go, despite the teams awful form in the league, we are still not mathematically out of the title race.

If Arsene Wenger gets his act together, puts out 11 players who want to win for the club and plays them in the right positions in the right system, then the league is not impossible.

In previous seasons, our current form and performances would have meant we were well out of the race by now, but in a season where literally anything can happen, we still have a (very slim) chance.

But it would mean not making any more mistakes which looks impossible because that’s all we are doing at the moment. It means having the balls to drop players like Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud who are out of form and out of confidence.

But will Arsene do that? We all know the answer to that don’t we?

I know that most Arsenal fans have thrown in the towel (myself included) but it is still possible. In previous seasons we’ve been top at this stage of the season and famously bottled it (which is pretty much every season) but for me, we have reached rock bottom and things surely can’t get any worse?

We lost to a hugely under-strength Manchester United side, we lost at home to relegation-battling Swansea City – how worse can it get? We can’t play as badly as we have been and show the lack of desire and commitment that we’ve shown because it is the worst I’ve seen for a long time.

The manager has to get his act together, give the team a massive kick up the backside and show us all he is worth his £8 million a year wages.

We have reached last chance saloon in the league and Arsene Wenger and his players need to get their act together, starting today against Tottenham Hotspur.

Are You Done With Arsenal Yet? Alexis Sanchez Almost Is

On Monday I said that I was officially done with Arsenal. After 27 years of supporting the greatest team that ever existed (to me obviously) I’d just had enough.

The performance on Sunday against a ridiculously under-strength Manchester United side was a disgrace of epic proportions, as Arsenal out Arsenal themselves and put in a timid and pathetic performance when 3 points was the minimum requirement.

We hadn’t won at Old Trafford since 2006 when Adebayor was played in by Cesc Fabregas for a late winner, and since then we’ve been pathetic.

At the weekend we lost to a Manchester United side ravaged by injuries to big players and managed by Louis van Gaal, and in the last two seasons it wasn’t much better. Last season we drew 1-1 at Old Trafford when Theo Walcott’s shot-cum-cross was deflected in for the equaliser and the season before that we lost 1-0 to a Manchester United side managed by David Moyes.

Fast forward to last night, and what happened?

We lost AT HOME to Swansea City, who are in a relegation battle and had troubles of their own – with their own manager in hospital. However, they still managed to turn us over.

The performances have been awful of late (ever since 2016 started in all honestly) and there has been no fight, desire or hunger from the players – and that all comes from the manager Arsene Wenger. Have the players stopped listening to his pointless rhetoric? Because it seems as if the players have lost faith in the manager, the same man who has failed to lead Arsenal to the Premier League title in 12 seasons.

Alexis Sanchez has come out and said Arsenal lack the hunger to be champions, and would you disagree?

“Sometimes we lack the mentality that we are already winning 1-0 when we go out on to the pitch.

“We lack this hunger to believe that we can be champions.

“If we go out onto to the pitch with hunger to become champions, to win the Premier League or the Champions League we can achieve it.

“I remember a game against Manchester United last year. The lads looked hungry for silverware as we took to the pitch.

“We crushed them in the first 20 minutes and went 3-0 up. We were hungry and brimming with confidence that day.”

He said this before the Manchester United game and what happened? We lost both games without showing any fight.

Arsenal are full of problems at the moment – they have a stubborn manager who is tactically inept, our main striker is a player who would struggle to get into most mid-table sides, never mind a title-challenging team, we have too many players like Walcott, Ramsey and Oxlade-Chamberlain who are just not good enough and are average at best, we persist with players like Gabriel who are useless when we have players like Chambers who is chomping at the big and put in an excellent performance against Leicester the other day – the problems are plentiful yet no-one is addressing the problems.

Is it time for Arsene Wenger to leave? I’ve been a big fan of Arsene and always believed that he has been the best option available to Arsenal Football Club, but for the first time in 21 years, I think my faith has disappeared.

Yet another season where we finish 4th (and it might be worse than that if we can’t get our act together).
