David Bren… Brendan Rogers Really Has No Idea Does He?

As the Luis Suarez saga drags on, Liverpool can’t help but come out and make themselves look more and more stupid as the days go on. And yesterday, Brendan Rogers really did show that he really has no idea when it comes to “having class” as he calls it.

Not content with looking like an A Class idiot on the Channel 5 “documentary” Being Liverpool, he has now come out and amazingly said Arsenal are lacking class.

His exact words on the matter were:

“I’ve got to say I’ve always associated Arsenal as a club with class and so there was a wee bit of a game there. For us, it’s about moving on and doing our own work. There will come a point where they understand our position.

Let’s go through his statement shall we?

I assume that Brendan Rogers thinks we “lack class” because of our £40 million bid and how obviously that’s not enough. Well surely if you don’t like the offer then they could just reject the bid?

Then, he talked about the world record bid (of roughly £86 million) for Gareth Bale, and how basically the £40 million (plus £1) Arsenal have offered is something of a derisory offer:

“Gareth Bale is a wonderful player and if they are prepared to pay that money, that’s where he is, but there is no way he is 100% better than Luis Suárez. But it’s not something we want to entertain this year.”

Seriously Brendan? You’re going to talk about values of players? This is a football club that paid £35 million for Andy Carroll! They also paid £15 million for Joe Allen, £16 million for Jordan Henderson, £20 million for Stuart Downing, £7 million for Charlie Adam, £20 million for Alberto Aquilani and over £19 million for Robbie Keane.

So take my advice Brendan, stick to your day job and talk less about Liverpool’s ability to accurately value players.

Liverpool should know more than any other club (I mean seriously, just look at the names and prices I’ve just mentioned) that footballers a simply worth what another football club is willing to pay. Just because you were stupid enough to buy Andy Carroll at £35 million doesn’t mean he’s worth that much does he?

The fact is, Luis Suarez is a player that wants to leave so therefore his value is going to be less than it would be if he wanted to stay. We’ve had it with Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie, and now it’s happening with Luis Suarez. He might be worth £50 million but Arsenal would be stupid to offer that now, especially with Liverpool being the ones coming out and making a fool out of themselves. Arsene Wenger and Arsenal have conducted themselves in the correct way, keeping all of the details private and giving very basic answers when asked by the press.

It is Liverpool and Brendan Rogers that can’t help themselves talk about the whole situation (and that includes their American owner on Twitter as well) and the ones who are “lacking class”. I would also go as far to say that they are a disgrace making everything so public. Why do they feel the need to come out and shout to anyone who will listen? Surely, if they don’t want to sell they should just turn down our offer, say they’re not selling and then that’s the end of it.

They are the ones who can’t shut up and making this whole issue into the saga that it is.

Anyway, as the Liverpool manager is full of wonderful insights, there’s actually a quiz where you can guess and see who said a particular quote, David Brent or Brendan Rogers.

Answering Some of The Most Common Accusations

Ever since blogging about Arsenal since 2004 (and on this website since 2006), there have been a number of accusations banded around about my motives, support and supposed vendetta against Arsene Wenger. Regular readers however will know that I have stated many many times that I think Arsene Wenger is the greatest manager we have ever had and what he has done for the football club has been nothing short of miraculous. 16 consistent seasons in the Top 4? No-one else in football could have managed that in my opinion. Three Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups and so many happy memories have made Arsene a legend.

But that does not mean he is incapable of mistakes. I always call it how I see it, even if it isn’t all complimentary. It is strange that criticising any aspect of the football club immediately makes me a Spurs fan and anti-Wenger. Those are both ridiculous statements and people who have read my blog over the years will know that the majority of my posts are positive.

But it doesn’t mean I’m blind to the problems at the club. This summers transfer window has been nothing short of a disaster. People will say I am being overly negative but for the first time in about 8 years, we are finally in a position to build something special and create a team that can truly compete for the major honours. After 8 seasons of struggling to the Top 4 positions, we are now capable of spending big money in the transfer market.

Here, I answer the most common feedback I get from Arsenal fans:

You are a Spurs supporter:

Er… no, I’m obviously not.

Blowing £50 million plus on a player would make you happy:

Actually this is not true. In fact, I’ve stated that spending £50 million plus on Suarez is something I wouldn’t be overly happy with. With a £70 million “war chest” I would rather spend some on a central defender, midfielder and forward – areas we need to strengthen to really compete. A marque signing is not something I particularly want – I am not that fickle or shallow.

If we brought in 3 players in those positions, and our overall spend was only £30 million in total then I’d be more than happy with that. The thing that has annoyed me about this summer is the lack of guile in the transfer market and the inability to sign a single player of quality that would give both the fans and the players a massive boost.

You are anti-Arsene Wenger:

Nope, that’s not true either. He is a miracle worker and has done great things but I do believe he is reluctant to spend money in the transfer market and would rather “create” his own world class players (such as Patrick Vieira, Thierry Henry, Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie). But Arsene needs to realise we’ve lost a lot of big players (and captains) over the last 8 seasons and we are at the point where we need to recruit experienced, top class player to create a squad that can truly compete at the highest level.

You hate Arsenal:

I love Arsenal but I am not blind to the facts. Saying Arsenal sell their best players every summer is not anti-Arsenal, it’s fact. Saying we’ve done poorly in the transfer window isn’t being negative, it’s fact. If we had signed quality players in the transfer windows then I would have reason to be more positive. How can anyone be positive about no new players coming in?

Arsenal to Reveal Big Striker Signing Before The Emirates Cup!

After being labelled negative by some Arsenal fans for posting my last few articles on how the transfer window was a debacle, how Arsenal have conned the supporters by “pretending” to sign players and explaining why Arsenal will won’t spend a penny this summer, I’ve decided to look around and try to find something “positive”.

And the only glimmer of hope I can find is with The Emirates Cup. I’ve stated before that the new Arsenal away kit launch and the Asia Tour would have been perfect opportunities to reveal an exciting new signing and give all of the Arsenal fans, and players, a massive lift before the start of the new season.

And today signals the last big showcase event to reveal a new signing.

So this might be a bit “out there”, but it could just be genius, which Arsene Wenger is after all.

With Arsenal fans disappointed and frustrated at the lack of big signings, Gonzalo Higuain represents one of those disappointments. But what if, Arsenal and Arsene came up with something spectacular?

Surely it is no co-incidence that Arsenal’s first opponents in The Emirates Cup are Italian side Napoli, the very club Gonzalo Higuain signed for after being “so close” to joining Arsenal.

But what if this was planned all along?

Can you imagine the massive explosion of excitement if this happened:

Picture the scene now… Arsenal and Napoli have their team sheets read out to the Arsenal faithful… Gonzalo Higuain’s name is called out on the Napoli team sheet to a chorus or boos all around the stadium. Then, as Napoli walk onto the pitch, their starting eleven comes out but Higuain isn’t there.

What’s going on everyone in the stadium asks?

Then, the Arsenal team come out one by one. The first ten players come onto the pitch but wait, where’s our eleventh man?

After a long pause, the stadium announcer shouts out “Gonzalo Higuain!” and in one of the most spectacular events in Arsenal’s history, Higuain comes onto the pitch in an Arsenal shirt!!

The crowd go absolutely crazy!

Arsene Wenger you old joker, he had us all fooled after all!

Who Is To Blame For This Transfer Window Debacle?

As you will probably have heard by now, Arsenal expert Amy Lawrence was on Radio 5 Live and commented on the current situation in the transfer market.

In a nutshell, she suggested that unlike other football clubs like PSG and Manchester City that have come into money recently Arsenal are still reluctant to spend. Sides like PSG weren’t afraid to “splash the cash” and even though we have a “war chest” at our disposal we just can’t come around to spending any of it.

So who is to blame for the lack of spending so far this summer?

As regular readers will already know, I truly believe we won’t spend a penny this summer.

We’ve seen our number one target Gonzalo Higuain slip through our fingers, Stevan Jovetic has moved to City and we haven’t followed up interest in Marouane Fellaini or Lars Bender. Amy Lawrence suggested the Higuain deal was done and dusted before Napoli came along, but the fact we missed out on him shows our lack of guile in the transfer market and because we’ve been penny pinching for so long we just don’t know how to close a deal when it comes to the most coveted players. We’re experts in signing “players with potential” from France but not a world class player from a big club.

But what was most damning from the Amy Lawrence interview was her insight into things behind the scenes. I am a big fan of Amy Lawrence and listen to her on The Guardian’s Football Weekly Podcast and tend to believe what she says when it comes to football, and Arsenal in particular. So what she said made sense to me.

What she suggested was that Arsene Wenger couldn’t change his way of being “careful with money” and was unwilling to spend, whereas Ivan Gazidis and the board wanted Arsene to improve the squad. She also said that if it comes to the end of the transfer window and we haven’t signed anyone, then there will be some tension. I suggest that amongst Arsenal fans that particular ship has already sailed.

So who is to blame?

There are sections of the Arsenal faithful who would take a bullet for Arsene Wenger but it seems he is the one who is reluctant to spend. Also, as Arseblog has already suggested, when Ivan Gazidis came out and declared we had loads of money to spend, he was actually trying to call out Arsene to spend some money.

Of course, these are all just theories at this point but the fact still remains we’ve missed out on big opportunities to give all of the Arsenal fans a big boost this summer. The perfect time to reveal a new and exciting signing would have been at either our new kit launch or on the Asia Tour.

But almost 11 weeks after the season ended we still haven’t spent a penny.
